did you sand the body perfectly smooth? if not it will show in the finish. you can try heavy grit sandpaper to get out any imperfections and then finish with 320 grit to make it very smooth.
then what i do is spray a few coats (2-3) of lacquer-based sand 'n' sealer which can be found in aerosols at most hardware stores. i think defts makes it, not sure though.
you can then spray a few coats of primer. i use rustoleum oil-based white primer which also comes in aerosols.
don't forget to dry sand between each coat of everything up to this point. 320 grit works well.
then you can start with the lacquer and you should wetsand with 320 between each coat. spray enough coats that you can't see the primer anymore.
then you can start with the clear coats. i have used a couple different kinds before. stewmac, defts, rustoleum. they are all nitro lacquer and pretty much the same thing. the rustoleum stuff is pretty cheap (costwise) so that's what i've been using lately.
you can really go nuts with the clearcoats, like 1-2 cans. it depends on how glossy you want it to look and how durable you want the finish to be.
after that, let it cure for a few weeks and then sand/buff it glassy smooth.

i usually like to let each coat of everything dry overnight because i'm a nazzy like that. but you can probably get the sand 'n' sealer and primer stuff done in a day. you should probably take some time with the lacquer so as not to mess it up.

That's the way to do it! The only thing I don't do is wetsand in between color coats (Unless I mess up), I spray the color coats extremely light and that seems to do it for me, dont really get any orange peel doing this way.
