I haven't done anything to the body yet -- I am waiting for paint to arrive. The colour will be "light blue poly", a Mercedes-Benz colour used from 1958-1960.

Here is a picture of the headstock (1974 Music Master neck):

And the unifinished/unassembled strap (Harris Tweed outter, cotton inner, leather ends):

That's one funky strap! One part hippie, one part country-bumkin! Nice!

Ha. That's not what I had in mind, but interesting.

In fact, I had exactly the opposite in mind -- high-end hand made clothing. I had luxury goods in mind when designing the guitar. I have a high appreciation for true luxury items (not to be confused with designer brands like Gucci, for example, which I do not consider true luxury). I mean items made with quality materials and superior craftsmanship but done in a tasteful manner; whether if it's a suit, a shoe, or a chair.

And hence the Harris tweed? Is it real tweed?

Interestingly the entire tweed industry on Harris was saved by an order by Nike so they could make tweed trainers.

Yes, it is made of real Harris tweed taken from a jacket.

I thought I would post an update for those of you who are interested.

I am still waiting for the body paint to arrive, and dinosaur bone for the control knobs. However, the pickguard is done:

I was unhappy with the first strap, so I started another one. Also in this picture is the tremolo bar with a Spinosaurus tooth (lol @ drilling into something that is 100 ma) attached to wood -- this still needs a bit of work:

I'm sad that this project is almost over... I think I want to start another.

Artificial petrified wood has been produced in a Washington lab. In the process small cubes of pine were soaked in an acid bath for two days then in a silica solution for another two. The product was then cooked at 1400 °C in an argon atmosphere for two hours. The result was silicon carbide ceramic which preserved the intricate cell structure of the wood. Soaking in a tungsten solution produced a tungsten carbide petrified wood.

good luck trying that.

Thanks. No, it is flamed maple painted (watercolour and arcylic paints, with about 15-20 layers of clearcoat) and polished to look like petrified wood.

I should probably add this picture of the knobs before they were cut so you can see the details:

Haha, kind of. The guitar looks sort of terrifying in person.

Dave, the paint never arrived; I think it was lost in the mail or something. I cancelled the order today -- it might have been for the best because I am so used to the guitar being white that I think I want to keep it white, or maybe white with the slightest bit of blue in it.

Is the dino-poop stuff that the guard was made out available in different thicknesses? You might as well make a body out of it too.....

the mustang trem looks kinda out of place with just the one pickup. i'd put in a musicmaster bridge or something.
i like how far you've gone to be original.
