i'm thinking of taking the plunge

You could totally cop the same vibe with a modified Epiphone - just check the neck before you buy. They've been better lately, but sometimes you'll find one with an almost unplayable baseball bat neck.
And you'll want replacement PUPs - Classic 57s from Gibson would get the sound from that Suede video and they're on the bright end for humbuckers. Epiphone's are a little too muddy. Most people take the 57s out of their Gibbys to put in high gain or wolftone BS, so I'd think you could find a used set on eBay.

Just get the damn Gibson if you want it. We're not monks, why deny yourself. Also the whole Gibson QC thing is so overblown, especially at that price point.
besides some late 90's ones, I mostly hate hollowbodies Epi's they feel so cheap. I think they make the new ones in China too and they're even worse.

i think i've found what i'm looking for at a more realistic price band (for now lol). the only snag is that it's been disconutined so it's trawling ebay for one.

He gave Noel Gallagher a vintage Les Paul but i've never heard of that. Butler is a distinct player, the sound is more his rather than a result of the guitar. Give Bernard a Strat and he wont sound much different.suede wrote:I think that Johnny Marr gave a gibson to Bernard Butler, so it might be the same guitar...
Epiphone Sheratons are great guitars but i guess you want the bigsby.
There are other quality brands to look for such as Guild, old Aria Pro's etc. if you put a search in for 'bigsby semi accoustic' i bet it throws allsorts up.
Like this quality Skylark
Could always buy the guitar & fit a Bigsby yourself.Progrockabuse wrote:i think i've found what i'm looking for at a more realistic price band (for now lol). the only snag is that it's been disconutined so it's trawling ebay for one.

i found a tokai 335 clone on fleabay, circa 1982. thinking of getting that, then adding the varitone and bigsby. really want to find one with the custom gibson headstock and block inlays, though i could do them myself.

A friend of mine has a Tokai 335, it's really nice... As well as being cheaper, at lot of them are apparently better made than teh Gibsons...Progrockabuse wrote:i found a tokai 335 clone on fleabay, circa 1982. thinking of getting that, then adding the varitone and bigsby. really want to find one with the custom gibson headstock and block inlays, though i could do them myself.
