Neck binding: FAO luthiers!

What thickness binding is normally used on bound necks? Stew Mac have some binding which I think is only for bodies, it's about 1mm x 6mm, is this any good? I'd like to practice binding a neck and I'd like to get some proper sized binding.

If you know any places which sell it then please let me know

first of all.
what are you going to use to bind the neck(in term of jig/bit)
and what neck.
stewmac has about 10 different sizes and thicknesses depending on if its black,white, cream, laminated etc etc.
DO NOT try to bind a neck that is already shaped unless you have a superior jig that is based off of the center of the neck.
i have only ever bound 3 necks and they were all single, no laminate stuff.
and with all of them i did it before i shaped the neck.

Hmm I see, I thought I could just route the edges of the fretboard so the binding was sticking up 1mm and then use a scraper to take it down to fretboard level

the neck is already shaped though...what is going to be the problem with a shaped neck??

you have to be able to have a bearing run along something flat, and there isn't enough "wood" for the bearing to run on, so it will slip, it may work for about 40 percent of the neck, but towards the nut to the 12th it will slip and gouge out the fretboard, i know this, becuz i tried.
once with a table router bit, and once with a handheld stewmac jig thing for archtops.

This guy has a thread about making sparkle telecasters. (I've posted it before). He binds a couple necks in it too. One of them black and white checkerboard and one of them red white and blue. It's about 45 pages though. I think I've linked to the black and white checkerboard page.

oh wow, i would have never thought of doing that with rock maple, i remeber a guy scoreing the inside of a voilin like that and showing me how with a lil rigged up blade like that but using it on rock maple,. genius,
and looks like alot of work but it sure turned out well.
