Seems like everyone here shoots knuckle children over glossy necks, am I the only one who thinks they're sticky and gross? I was looking at this:
And could hardly make my hand slide across the neck. Satin finishes are so much smoother feeling, why no love?
i think it depends on a few factors, like what kind of gloss, how fat the neck is how your hand reacts to playing .
the Mexicans have awesome gloss necks, but the squres gloss suck IMHO, i don't like gloss necks as much once my hand starts getting sweaty, but i just don't like the feel of satin. but nothing compares to the feel of a vintage 60's well worn in fender neck.
I like glossy necks. Most people that are into vintage gear are into gloss cause thats a part of the vintage thing. Gloss or satin? It's just a preference thing.
I just hate the feel of satin. It's smoother yes, it just feels funny. Gloss is nice. And glossy maple fretboards are even better still. And sweaty hands on a glossy neck is like, fuck yeah.
My #1, a heavily modified telecaster, has a heavily worn-in neck. It's not quite at the level that my old Hagstrom 12 string was, but sanding + heavy use + sweaty palms (too much ) = filthy, yet oh-so-smooth neck.
The only glossy neck I've had that hasn't been nicely worn in is my RIC one, and it took me a while to get used to it, but now I prefer it and it's just as easy to move around sewaty or not, and it's sooo nice when it's been all cleaned up and you move your clean hand over it :s
horses for courses - ribbed for pleasure all the way baby...
i grew up with a MIJ Squier and MIA Strat- so satin just feels normal and comfortable. have nitro gloss on a gibson, and think it would just feel wrong with a satin neck. glossy neck on a jag too, which isn't so bad.
neck on my MIM strat was sanded back after i tried an old mustang and loved the worn finish on it. If i ever get to replace it, it would be with a satin warmoth neck though...
