Advice on getting teh tonez

yeah, you don't need that shit. I hope it was just one hell of a typo.Mike wrote:yeah, it was a pretty ignorant post.Hurb wrote:oh my godAeon wrote:Mike: I'd be interested in a SHO that you build, but I live across the pond. Do you ship to USA? And also do you use paypal? Also, how much would you actually charge... I don't think I'd want to pay that much for something that is about $6 in parts, although I'd be happy to pay for the labor.

I'm having plenty of fun wrestling with your Fuzz Monster and finishing off this booster run anyway, it's no skin off my ample nose.
You know what colour you want your box by the way? I'm happy to buy you any colour you want from Halford's extensive collection, if you wanna take a gander and get back to me. I also will probably have some Ford Riviera Blue and VW Brilliant Orange left over if you wanted me to do a multicolour type thing with masking tape. It's your call.
Go have a wander round Halfords and let me know.

what size case are we talking by the way? and is it too early to ask for jacks on the top like my saltooster?

It's going to be the exact same size as the BoxOfRock clone I made that Progrockabuse has, and the Orange Peel I made. I have a case on the way, I'll have to do some experiementation as to whether the jacks could be fit on the top without interfering with the 4 knobs on the top (Fuzz, Bass, Treble, Volume). I could possibly move them down to compensate, but I don't want to encroach on the board space. I'll see what I can do, you know if it's possible that I'll get it done. I'll do some measurements when your case arrives.Hurb wrote:oooh! I hadn't even thought about it really. you can just paint it in the orange and blue if its easier?Mike wrote:*shrug*

Go pick yourself a colour, I'll be able to use any leftovers. I'd like for this one to stick out from the others, hence why I did the BoR blue. If you're not bothered though I'll just masking tape it in half (top and bottom or left and right?) and do it Orange and Blue.
awesome dude! along with the possibility of jacks on top, could you flip the case the other way so its thinner? sorry to be a pain, its just that way it would take up less room on my overfilled pedal board.Mike wrote:It's going to be the exact same size as the BoxOfRock clone I made that Progrockabuse has, and the Orange Peel I made. I will try and get to halfords sometime.

Erm.
That might be tricky. With the pedal vertical there won't be space between the two footswitches for the board, which I guess would have to sit above them but below the knobs. Which again might encroach on things if I can't fit all four in a line, again I'll have to do some measurements but I'll bear it in mind!

Hey, didn't mean to come off sounding like a dolt with the "$6" comment. Actually I see how it would be more like maybe $30 in parts then all the research/soldering/painting involved, plus the whole ordeal of getting the project started. So yeah, around $100 or so would be fair I guess. I wasn't try to sound like I was lowballing you and expecting to get a boutique hand made pedal for like $20, haha.
If you do end up making one, I'd certainly be interested. You seem pretty qualified, and seeing as you already built a working Box of Rock clone I don't see how this one could go wrong. (I've heard that the BoR is just three cascaded SHO circuits with a master volume?) I guess you should try making one for yourself, then posting about it. I think you may find that more people than just me would be interested in picking up a SHO. Maybe in the future you could even tackle a Klon Centaur clone or something like that.
Speaking of which, I find the anti-DIY mentality kind of obnoxious in regards to copying pedal schematics. The majority of these boutique pedals are nothing more than modifications of pre-existing designs. And most "copycats" are savvy enough to add another pot or variation on the schematic, so it's not a DIRECT copy...
Anyways yeah, Mike you do good work and please keep me updated on any progress.

No worries, I wasn't offended, you were just wrong. Your estimate of $30 is still too low, it's more like $50. As a DIY'er you don't really reap the benefit of any bulk discount, plus there's shipping on all component orders, normally from a group of different suppliers.
The BoR is a little more involved than three SHO stages, in fact it's very amplike in it's construction. I wasn't impressed with the tone control so I ripped it out and threw another in there, it sounded much better. It's a nice sounding pedal, but it's not ZVex's design, not by a longshot, it has it's roots in the BSIAB* design, albeit slickly marketed. I like the pedal though, it sounds brilliant.
I'm a complete pedal newbie, but I have a degree in Electronic Engineering which helps - particularly with cutting through mojosniffing hyperbole. I'm just building for laughs, to see if I can do it, and to help my friends. If and when I make a SHO clone, I'll look you up if I'm willing to part with it. Funny you mention Klon Centaur, I have the schematic for one, I can't say I'm hugely interested in building one though.

It's cool that you can do this on the side, but you should be fairly compensated for the hard work. I know you're not really interested in doing this as a business, but I bet with the grassroots sort of thing going on here you could expand your hobby into a nice thing on the side that could pay for a vacation/beer money, haha. If I knew anything about electronics I'd be building pedals of my own, but I had trouble even wiring up my custom guitar, and it was essentially just a Telecaster circuit (and I think I still have a very slight ground loop problem in there
)
I do know that if you built a Klone that it would be very highly sought out thanks to its "mystique". People would pay big bucks for something that normally sells for $350+, but depending on its complexity it might not even be worth it.
Question: Are you currently building any pedals, or did you stop for the time being? I'd definitely be interested in getting one from you, I'd much rather buy from someone "real" than a faceless corporation or a greedy* boutique maker whose business is based mostly on hype.. I'm planning on selling off most of the pedals I have and would like to get a decent distortion/boost/whatever.
And sorry for the noobiness, I know that shortscale is a tight-nit group and doesn't take that kindly to newcomers, haha.
PS: Saw that you consider XO your favorite album.. High fives on that, Smith is probably my favorite musician of all time tho I prefer Either/Or.
*greedy in the sense that selling modified circuits with pretty cases doesn't exactly warrant a $250~ pricetag for a Tubescreamer clone, tho the market will bear what it can handle
