You shouldn't varnish tonight either way. Like I said - 6 hours of colour drying time.

you can prime and colour with 20 mins between coats but your colour has to cure nicely before you clearcoat

I'm not gonna prime it, my old man reckons I don't need to seeing as it's a spray and the surface is nice 'n even. I can always give him a "David Dickinson" with the spray paint if it goes wrong.

I'm gonna aim to do all the colour tonight, leave it overnight and clearcoat it tomorrow afternoon.

Kinda scary taking all the pedal guts out of the case- only done it a few times and it's normally all PCB-mounted stuff. Was dead careful though.

You'll be able to fix anything that would have gone wrong anyway, and I'm sure euan did a good job and that it's plenty sturdy. Worth testing before you put everything back in the case.

Fredo has 4 pedals he's been wanting me to paint for him- including a RAT where he wants the finish to be FUR (Which I shall do only because I want to see an ugly ass EWOK pedal, and not real fur, just hairy stuff). Just trying to look for my ultimate stack of sandpaper that was lost in the chaos of Portfolio Review '08. I'll post pix or even try a video demo. This I shall do either Saturday or next Monday. Since the weather is FRICKIN HOT AS FUCK (my mom's trying to save money so she won't let me use the A/C, and yes I'm bitter) that should make for ideal drying conditions.

I've posted this before- but to paint a pedal (sorry if there's attitude, it's hot and I wants cold air

)

1.) What paint do I use?

Who bloody cares? It's a pedal, a small thing that's gonna get stepped on anyway so why spend $15 on automotive paint? I suggest Krylons. You can get a can for about $3 in Walmart, they come in awesome colors, and also come with adjustable nozzles for horizontal and vertical spraying.

2.) I got primer, so now what?

First of all, I'd make sure the surface was clean of dirt, dust, and oil. Throw it in the wash with your underwear or sneak it in with you sister's dishwashing duties. Just make sure you dry it fast because it's metal, ees gonna rust. I'd just wipe it clean. Dry that shit, then mist it real lightly, wait 2 mins, then do your first coat, spraying the edges of the box first. Wait about 5 minutes, then do another coat, wait 5 mins again then another coat if necessary. Make sure that shit dries completely before you wetsand. Give it about 1-2 hours to be sure. This is the ideal time to go out to lunch or grab a bear or booty time, disco disco, etc. Your choice.

3.) Shit's dry! Wet sand time!

Grab 600, 800, and 1000 (or 1500 or 2000, depending on how anal your are. I have 2000 available. I am anal. I will sand from 600, to 800, to 1000 to 1500 to 2000. This pedal will be PERFECT or it will not exist!! Ok now I'm crazy)

4.) Clean that shit off by either washing it off or by wiping it with a soft but damp cloth. Paint time!

Once again, mist, wait, spray edges, wait, spray surfaces, wait, repeat if necessary, then wait 1-2 hours to before clearing. Same process for the clear coat.

5.) Let dry overnight. Next morning- done!

Patience is the key. And if you attempt to spray antigua I'll kick your butt!
Wait time depends on the weather. Do it indoors (a la garage) as opposed to your backyard if you can. Prevents from bugs getting into the finish. If you're not going to paint it, skip steps 1-3.

Oh-range. Yes, I wish I had got rid of the marker pen'D markings, but I'm hoping it'll get covered up by the paint eventually.

The clearcoat stuff I had isn't suitable for acrylic paint apparently, so that was a no go. This shit dries quiiiiiiiiick, and it looks good now. If starts to flake and shit, I'll put on another coat and clearcoat it, but for now it's sexy enough.

Best buds. It's definately a richer deep orange than the pics suggest..

There's a small chip on the bottom right to the metal, I monkeyed about with the CC on my pedal board, so I guess clearcoating is gonna be neccessary really. I'm gonna look online and get something suitable this time..

If you want it to be super durable you're gonna need at least two coats of colour and two of clear. You can go crazy on the clear coats if you want, it'll only make it stronger - however - don't lay each one on heavy, just build them up in stages, and remember to leave 6 hours between last colour and the clearcoating or you'll melt the not dried colour paint.

Also after you're done clearcoating you absolutely need to leave it to cure for 12 hours before assembling. It will seem ok after a couple of hours but that's just the top layer, you'll slice it all off with a stray movement.

I think I put like.. 4 or 5 coats of colour on, but didn't make em super thick, didn't want it to run (did a little bit on the front side, but nothing major).. so yeah, I'm gonna clearcoat that sonoffabiyatch like woah. Will probably sand it a little and recolour a few times again beforehand, to sort out the chip and slight inperfections.
