How to finish Ash?

Post by TheBurbz »

I have an Ash body and want to lacquer it but I'm not sure if I need to coat it before lacquering? I have sanding sealer but it has a yellow tinge to it which made the body look like some 70's pine furniture so I stripped it again. I just want a plain ash finish with no colour alteration.

you need to fill the grain first, otherwise you won't get a flat finish. then sand the whole thing perfectly smooth and start spraying clearcoat.

I've looked all over, I can't find a single place that sells clear grain filler in the UK. Stewy Mac do it but won't ship.

it's tough to find out here too. try looking for a woodworking store, that's the only place i've been able to find it. those idiots at home depot didn't even know what i was talking about.
if it comes to it, you can try diluting regular wood filler with lacquer thinner, but i've only ever had mixed results with this. and it makes a nasty mess and smells bad.

I originally got that basswood body (at least, that's what I asked for!). It was an ash body that Rob sent out to replace it. Not that I know my body woods very well, but maybe it needs a different treatment?

I thought that you had ordered them both ash, my mistake. Never mind, at least I don't have to look for grain sealer now

You think I could finish it blonde even though it's basswood?

Yeah, as far as I remember the wood looked nice, and well, it had you fooled right? Haha.

Might as well break with tradition, and show the basswood haters a thing or two too. I chose basswood because I actually like the sound of my Jag-Stang, the ash replacement was a bonus as RobO had it available. So yeah, go for it.

All of Leo's shit got the yellow treatment via Fullerplast. That may be the look you're after under the blonde.

fullerplast is (mostly) clear. the yellow you see on a lot of old fenders is stain for sunburst. on blondes, it's just yellowed clearcoat.
