Amp question Bassman

Post by tribi9 »

Somebody is selling a Fender 1966 Bassman head for $300, the amp does not power up. Would it be worth buying it? Can tubes cause it not to power up? Or maybe a blown fuse? I know squat about electronics.

Any input would be appreciated...

What do u guys think?

It could be literally anything from the simple to the fatal (transformer failure) causing it not to work. I would never buy blind like this unless I was considering the price to be appropriate for the chassis, tagboard and pots etc without the iron for use just as parts, with any other working parts being a bonus.

Seeing as you can get a working bassman for that much in the States I would tell him to fuck off.

Yeah hold off on that, unless you are savvy at repairing it yourself, you're looking at $150+ in service charges. Not to mention the blind-faith factor.

Unfortunately, people have caught onto Bassmans being good amps and they are now selling for $400+ in most places. Same thing happened to the silver face amps -- you used to be able to get a Twin Reverb for $600 (or at least I got mine for the much 4 years ago), now they are going for $750+.

It's kinda like all forms of unknown but good equipment. Jags and Jazzmasters used to be undesirable, but now a vintage one fetches over 3k.

not a good deal unless you can (easily) fix it yourself. the repair bill would push it out of deal range.

that would've been a fair price for a non-working bassman. stay away.
