I just tried one out yesterday and i totally agree with everything you just said. Les Pauls are good guitars but they surely don't fit everyone's taste. I like Gibson Les Paul jrs and specials but the "traditional" Pauls just don't click with me.Jagermeister wrote:ugh.
Pauls always sound too honky to me, and don't have the distorted definition of Fenders, which just bothers me after having played Fenders... Neck pickup is useless for chording, clean sound is phlegmy... I think I really wanted to like them but I grew out of that. They do a big RAWK chord sound, manage jazzy runs with the tone rolled off, and don't particularly excel at anything else to my ears, though as I don't need any jazz/butt rock tone, I sold mine...
Odd how someone mentions Gibson hate being for their unattainability. Nearly everyone has something nearly approximate to one. Though that would be an appropriate reason to hate Strats/Teles/Marshalls as well, a million Led Zep stoners trying to make me like Les Pauls isn't going to fly.
(I appreciated the individual controls for each pickup and didn't mind the scale length, however...)
Test Drive Traditional Les Paul

it's horses for courses. they're too 'heavy' sounding for a lot of the music I play, but still manage to fit in for solos and double tracked parts in a studio. In retrospect, I've probably used mine maybe twice live and a dozen times in a studio: it's utterly stunning to play but the thought of denting or twatting means that until gibson come along and start donating guitars, it stays in whilst the fenders get workhorsed. would love to gig with a DC special or jnr though - the non-flashy finish combined with p90s just appears to me for some reason..soma89 wrote:Les Pauls are good guitars but they surely don't fit everyone's taste. Cheap: Epiphone. Except some are expensive as fuck.
If you think of god as a pair of pants, a spiritualist thinks he needs pants, in fact he wants pants but none of the conventional types of pants seem to fit just right, so he makes his own pants and is happy that his knees are no longer cold.-fibus

Did that come over a bit Austin Powers?
Anyway, remember, "the Les Paul is the industry standard because it has a balanced tone"
