Is comp orange paint supposed to be expensive?

Painting? Routing? Set-up tips? Or just straight-up making a guitar from scratch? Post here, and post pics!

Is comp orange paint supposed to be expensive?

Post by roachello »

We get our paint from a local mom and pop paint shop. I painted El Moco, my Astro Step pedal, and the Malikcaster using paint from that store. So today we went to look for some excellent ice blue color and the guy says it's going to be $25 a can. If it's high quality automotive paint, then I guess it's ok, but we didn't find the exact color we had in mind. Out of curiosity, we asked how much the comp orange looking color was- turns out oranges, reds, and yellows are about $70 a can! Isn't that quite ridiculous? Im guessing people who use those colors want to retouch their porsches and hummers and that's probably why it's so expensive, but damn.

So my question is, anyone that has experience with painting competition orange, what brands did you use and how much did it cost you?

Thank u :)

I only use spray cans from a local car shop. It costs me $10 a can and there's all the colours you could want.

However it would take about 3 cans to do a guitar I would say.

I need to find a better shop. That's a great deal for automotive paint!! Especially when you're painting pedals!

yeah just go to a standard WallMart type Automotive shop, ours is called Halfords.

All the different colours I've painted pedals cost $10 from that shop. I normally get 2 pedals per can.

Automotive paint has become so much more than Krylon, et al. It's got all this extra stuff in it to combat the elements, and maintain shine. As such, some car paints are going to be grossly expensive. But you can get Grabber orange at a hobby shop for much less.
