64 Blackface Bassman (now with pics)

Post by James »

I have it. It rocks.

November 1964.
someone at tdpri wrote:Since Fender changed some aspect of the Bassman circuit nearly every year they were in production, I like to "date them" based on more of what I see in the circuit when I pop open the chassis versus what a code number is telling me. A BF AB165 is going to look different than a early SF AB165 even though they have the same chart and even though the schematics should be the same. I've worked on dozens of these and they have all been different from one another. I've even seen unmolested late era BF Bassmans that had the SF changes already added.

So, BF Bassmans are like someone said, 65 - 67 or early 68. Then, when you get inside you can tell if it's an early one or a later one and if you're really lucky, you'll see that it was an AA864...the holy grail of BF Bassmans. Out of all the ones I've worked on, I've only seen two of those.
I have an AA864!

I'm teasing a little but I'm also cropping and re-sizing still.

A few more...

The money shots (more large pics)...

(I'm aware and don't care that the grill cloth on the cab isn't as tight as it could be. The sunlight is exaggerating it a little and it's close enough for me.)

I am actually considering it. It's not quite as heavy as I thought and the cover will help a little. If I was going through London like I originally planned there'd be no way as I'd have to negotiate the tube with it. I'm going to check out my train routes and see how many changes I'll have to make, and if they're ones i'm familar with from previous trips (so I have an idea the distance of carrying involved).

I take it people want to try a COUPLETONES through this? Taking it might mean not taking my ES175 and I've pretty much promised Donk I'll take that. I could feasible take both. The weight is very doable it's just the bulk.

Ok I just checked out the details and I have a few trains to catch so it's unlikely. If there's crazy interest in me bringing it I'll obviously be a bit more tempted. I don't want to take it on a long journey like that and get a "yeah um.. that's nice... so where are these valve juniors i heard people were bringing?!"

It's a bassman, of course it's going to get some proper attention. I can't see taking that on the train being too much fun though.

Just read a little about the circuits. The one I have, AA864, started in August (8/64) and ended with the next revision to AB165 in January (1/65). So basically there is a third of a year in which they made these.
