I got a bill through the post a week after my caps arrived, and phoned the customer services number, and said that I wasn't happy that this fee had been levied, as it was only £1 less than the VAT due on the package. I then repeated the following three phrases:

"What is your industry's regulatory body?"
"Can you tell me the name of the ombudsman who oversees your industry?"
"I'm well aware of my rights under the Sale of Goods Act 1978" (that's like a silver bullet, that one)

... in various orders, inflections and accents until they waived the charge in order to get me off the phone

That's like saying someone was a very considerate mugger - cheeky fuckers, not like my parcel was the only one FedEx had to pick up from Customs that day - it was a service I'd paid up front for, cheeky bastards should suck it up and start delivering some half decent customer service, or I'll go with the competition (on point of principle, I won't use Parcelforce anymore - consts).

What next, the postman coming to the door and asking for £5 for some diesel for the van because he's a bit low? Where will it end? Eh? Where?

I'm just saying. I don't agree with it. I've been too lucky recently and I know I'm going to get stung on this headset I'm getting.

$19 headset, $25 shipping. I'm looking at what £10 of fees? :(

If you buy it from eBay, and it's less than £50ish, you should be fine. FedEx tried spinning me some jive turkey about having to pay VAT on everything that you buy from businesses rather than private individuals, but this is about the first time I've ever had it enforced. It's always worth arguing with tossiness like this, even if just to voice your ire.

Arrived at home - no VAT to pay! Yay!

Basically, if it's under £19 in consignment value, there's no VAT. Looks like they declared the consignment value as the value of the goods rather than the total order value - excellent.
