Is that all that's left of the stripe on that one? I wasn't too taken with it at first but I like it more everytime I come back to this thread. I like it pretty much as much as the other vintage comp orange ones now.

#5 and #2 are amazing looking. I'd happily lay down the money for either of those when I get to the purchasing a vintage Fender stage.

Yeah thats it and it's covered by the strap.
While looking through old e-mails trying to find pictures of the red '68, I found and old invoice for a competition orange guitar I purchased from the Hollywood GC. They sold it out from under me after they processed the payment. It was going to be my first orange and the invoce is for $2,750

I didn't have as many guitars back then, but I still don't know what I was thinking.
I did get my money back.......pfhew!

I think the wiki is gone rod, i can never get on it anyways. But yeah, this thread is awesome. It should be a Mustang Sticky, very informative and very droolsome!
I got an orange 'Stang too, love the colour and well... the Mustang is an underated guitar. I love it to bits, most comfy body shape ever and the neck is effortless to play.

I've gotta start by saying I no longer own this one and the pictures were taken for me to look at before I bought it.
This one has a neck stamp, neck plate, pickups and pots dated to 1968. The hotrail was in it when I got it, so it was a plus for me. The matching headstock has a black decal w/o the contour body. I think this was a early competition since most others have a white decal. It has white kluson tuners also that makes me believe it was early on. Even though # 5 has klusons, I think that was due to a shortage in stock. I read in the Fender book that they were back ordered on the Mustang by some 150,00 guitars at the time, so it stands to reason they would use what ever parts were available. Anyway back to this guitar, it has a fat ball bat shaped neck contour and from what I remember it didn't stay in tune too well. Over all I was pretty unimpressed with this one so I held on to it for a few months and got rid of it.

edit: I just noticed that the headstock has dual string trees too. Maybe another indication that they wern't sure what they were gonna do with these models?

I've had other guitars and I always came back to the Mustang. At this point I would feel like I was cheating if I played anything else.

The goldtop 'Stang looks cool, even if the stripe is in the wrong place. I like it with the white pickup, myself. And the pearl pickguard is a nice one. Is it nitrocellulose plastic, like the OG's? I find that the pearl guards on the Jap reissues are absolutely hideous. Brilliant white and cheap looking. I'm planning on buying a RI Mustang bass soon, and if I go for the Fiesta one, the guard will be replaced as soon as possible.

It's nitro and looks pretty good. I had Warmoth make 2 of them one is plain pearloid single bridge pickup with no switch holes and the other is aged pearloid single bridge pickup with one switch hole. The aged one looked horrid on the guitar, but looks good on my Musicmaster. I might cut a switch hole in the one thats on the guitar so I can do coil tapping.
I've got 2 reissue Mustang basses also. They are both white with brown tort. One of them is set up with flat wound strings and the other is regular. I have been thinking about getting a black scratch guard for one of them and doing it Dee Dee Ramone style.

A guy I know has them made. I messed up on my first try on that guitar and ruined it. The one thats on there is my second attempt and you can see where I fucked up the bottom of the F and it rolled on me on the g.

That's actually my plan if I get the white one! I do like the brown tort on the Jap Fenders, but white (or cream) guitars just look so badass with a black guard. My custard coloured CIJ '69 reissue 'stang has a black guard on it right now, and it looks sweet that way. If I get the Fiesta Red (a.k.a orange) one, I have no idea what colour pickguard to put on that would look good. Black would make it look like a halloween decoration. Mint would make it look like a faded Xmas decoration, and white is just a little too boring I think, for Fiesta. I might go for cream or parchement, or a brown tort.

I'm not completly sold on the whole purple burst thing. I've seen some that look way too random, blotchy and not uniform enough to be considered a true burst and there have been a few that I would swear were intentional. # 6 has the purple color throughout the body not just on the edges.
My thought on the subject is this: I worked as a commercial painter for the better part of 10 years. Any painter will tell you that when your mixing up multiple gallons of any color there are going to be variations from one to another, that is why gallons get boxed together in larger buckets. If you didn't and just worked out of individual cans and worked your way around a room it could be a different shade of the same color from where you started and where you end. And if you touchup from a different gallon the paint will most likely not match up and "flash" once the base coat is cured. Now say you have a production line and you spray 100 bodies out of one can of paint then do 100 more out of the next and so on. In QC they find flaws around the edges where maybe it was sanded through the top coat or whatever. Are they going to repaint the whole body or just around the edges? What are the chances they are going to touch it up from the same batch of paint?
Now as soon as I say all that our member sven has a purple burst that has it around the headstock also. Maybe it required a touchup too, but how could it have made it down the production line matched up to a burst body? Who knows. Maybe they were aware of it and set them aside so they could be matched up.

Again this is just my theory amongst many.
