Doog's thread as inspired me to build my own custom strat. I am not sure i want to go the route of buying all the bits in or just getting a squire and modding it. As i was looking around i noticed
this guitar which is pretty much exactly what i want (except i intend to put a humbucker in the bridge). Its made out of a wood called Indian Red Cedar though which i have never heard of but thats probably because i am only aware of the normal types like alder, ash, agathis, mahogany, etc. Has anyone any experience with this wood? Whats it like sound wise? Is it heavy?

yea, a lot of the squier are made out of odd woods like that. I think it's more like alder than anything else.
If I were to start a new strat mod project I would just get a squier bullet.
HOT TIP OF THE DAY (HTOTD):
Squier Bullet
+
GFS 64 Staggers
+
GFS Import Strat "upgrade" trem (rolled steel saddles and big ol' steel block)
=
Vintage Reissue Strat for under $200 (!)
cogito ergo sum...thing or other...

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. WANT!!!
Though I would probably start with a SX strat copy instead, maybe even one on the 24" ones...

What are the tuners like on these? Solid? Or do they need to be replaced too?

Fender employee: "I hear that basswood is called 'red cedar' in India. Just thought you should know."
Fender boss: "Sounds like you're going to get a pay raise, with that kind of attitude."

If you hit them with a large enough piece, yes.

hmmm, I'm not particularly dedicated either way, but the big-assed steel block is a must. and GFS is the first to make one for an import size trem.
