St. Jimmy,
I have an ADVT50 2X12 and I really like it. Personally I like the clean and vox-style amp models more than the hi-gain/metalish ones. I was just reading on valvetronix.net last night that a lot of people find the bass response a bit lacking but I can't say that I've noticed it, then again, I'm no expert.
The built in effects are quite decent and save the hassle of carting around a bunch of pedals, unless you are some kind of pedal-fetishist.

yeah, i've only been playing around with it for about an hour or so...but i love it so far. i'm personally liking the "bassman" model for clean, and the AC30 or 70's marshall for grit.

i played the fuck out of my new amp last night...and i love it to bits! It's way more tonally diverse than an amp that price should be. love, love love it.

both Marshall Valvestates and the Vox Valvetronix series use tube preamp, solid state power amps.

i will reiterate - who gives a f#ck if it sounds good??

surely the only thing that matters is how it plays. why does the design matter when it sounds really good?

it's only $300 in the US, he may as well check it out at least.
Where do you think the tubes effect the sound of an amplifier the most in a practical situation? What would be the point in having them (expensive and reliability ridden as they are) if not to affect the sound?

for me, i figure the right 12AX7 can color the pre-amp section enough to warm it up to the point where it doesn't sound all solid-statey. like i said, from my playing last night i determined this little amp will be quite versatile enough for mois.

i think my amp is solid clean and tube dirty

you can buy my amp cheep as fuck used, considering its a 100watt amp with a tube in it, which is the main reason i have never sold it and continue to rock with it

your cougar is a roc pro 1000 right? i had that amp and loved the piss out of it. to this day it's got the nicest "clean" tone out of any amp i've owned.

performer 1000's were re-named roc pro 1000's after like 2 years i think. they made roc-pro's for a lot longer period.

i liked the silver grille alot better on mine then the black grille of the roc pro. but i think thats the only diffrence between them

with my beringer Vamp2 pod thing i can dial the volume back on it.

so i can dial the clean on the amp all the way up to 8, get it to break up and then dial it back on the vamp.

very handy for a 150 dollar pod clone

the fucked up thing about the performer/roc pro is that on 1 its really quiet and on 2 it will blow the fucking roof off.

it doesn't really get louder on 3-10 though...it just breaks it up if you click on a gain switch and dial the gain down all the way and dial the volume up all the way.

you get very natural over driven tube sonds from the amp, and then dial back the vol on the Vamp

that last post didn't make sense.

you cant break up the clean channel because its solid state.

what i mean was is you gotta turn the gain channel 2 or 3 to get the tube working, then turn the gain knob down all the way, then dial the vol up to 8, then dial the vol on the Vamp down to 1 or 2.

the only thing that sucks about it, is that there isn't a power switch on it. you have to unplug it from the wall, or disconnect the power cord from the unit.

someone dun fucked up at the planning board.

its time they put out a Vamp-3. if it had a power switch on it i would sell mine and buy it

yeah, i loved my roc pro...you're right though, the sensitivity of gain/volume was tricky...but well worth it...with the way that modelling technology is going, i don't piss on POD and V-amp and valvetronix like i used to.

its worth the money just to put the thing into effects bypass and just use the extra volume/master knobs on the unit alone

i got a vc15 a few months ago for about 150Â£. it's an excellent little 2 channel, onboard reverb tube amp. the vc30 can go for almost the same if you look but thats tooo loud maaan for me. dont know if laney is widely available in the states tho.

the reverb in the orange crush series is first class.
