amazed how just a simple string change makes things better

Post by Progrockabuse »

hey peeps, i've been a user of gauge 10's for many years, yet these days i feel that on my les paul guitars, they feel too floppy. normally because gibson guitar are s shorter scale length than a fender guitar (ie. strat/tele etc).

i thought i'd try beefing up the strings to 11-52 and what do you know, tis makes a better coupleatones and sustains better. chords sound a lot nice too, especially on my les paul custom, which has always been missing something. i top wrap my strings, to give it extra mojo tone lol

They aren't flat wounds.

I can't do anything less than 11s now, 10s feel too rubber-bandy to me. My artcore was getting no use at all until I put some 12s on it, it feels and sounds better now, I like using that guitar to experiment, I think it's tuned to BBBBF#B at the moment.

i used to keep 9's on my old telecaster for when i had problems with my carpal tunnel, but since i had it operated on, i've been ok.

I like 9s on my Tele, but I keep 10s on everything else. I'm not sure which guitar to put those 3rd wound ones Cowy got me on though.

Power Slinkys FTW. I had been using 10's but making the switch made all the difference. I still prefer Medium gage on all my basses though. (45-105)

It feels a little better under your fingers for power chords on the A string and I find it feels better in general. They're generally thicker (1 or 2 units, so .022 instead of 0.20 or whatever the units are) which can make them quite a bit more difficult to bend. They're also much less prone to breaking. An unwound G can be a bit dodgy because it has a weaker structure than thinner unwound strings (ie e and b). The most common string to break is the high e, but then the next is the g because of the weaker structure.

Wound Gs are the way forward.
