just a quick question about pickup switches on mustangs

Post by Mustang Melx »

Is there any difference between having both pickup switches to the left or the right? I can't hear any but it kind of seems a bit of a pointless option otherwise?

cheers, I'm kind of confused though because I thought they had to be in opposite directions to be out of phase with each other, if they are both 'out of phase' doesn't that mean they are 'in phase' with each other....if so what are they out of phase with?

I dunno maybe i'm confusing myself here.

No they can't both be out of phase, that's the point he was making. You need them to be pointing in opposite directions for it to make any difference with both pickups on.

I've never played about with a mustang's switched so this is all just assumption.

well yes, that's what it sounds like to me....there doesn't seem to be any difference when they are going the same way (left or right)

yeah, both in one direction, they're just both on, both pointing toward or away each other (opposite directions), they're "out of phase"
no difference regarding if they're going left or right, or if they're pointing away from each other or towards each other.
the pickups can only be bridge on, neck on, both on, out of phase, or both off.

there is a very real difference!
its that fact that the "tone" travels thru more or less wire depending on which you select.
eric johnson told me that once.
