Hello! My first project (?)

Painting? Routing? Set-up tips? Or just straight-up making a guitar from scratch? Post here, and post pics!

Hello! My first project (?)

Post by worriedman »

Hello members. Among my rather small collection of guitars I have a strat copy by a company called "Sunlite." It looks suspiciously like an SX and it plays ok. I'm thinking of creating a project out of it.

Here are the specs:

Stratocaster Copy
25.5 scale
rosewood fretboard
3 single-coil pickups
6 screw trem
Red Sparkle finish
---------------------

And here is what I'm thinking of doing:

Reshaping the horns to resemble a musicmaster/dusonic shape.
buying a blank strat pickguard and shaping it to look semi-duosonicesque (sans the input jack) with two pickup spaces.
Rewire it to utilize only two of the pickups (bridge and neck) and have two potentiometers (volume for both)
refinish in ivory with a red pearloid pickguard

The only real problem I face is the body reshaping. I could eye it (some washable markers to sketch out the proper horn reduction) or find templates.

Any recommendations?

Also, I have a dremel and a bunch of bits. so the pickgaurd shaping isn't much of an issue (I've used it to make space for a p90 [soapbar] on a squire bullet)

I'd say leave the body but do the rest. Not a fan of pearloid on white but whatever floats your boat. Didn't see it was red, I love me some red on white, good choice.

Welcome to the forum dude.

Ah, that 65 reissue Mustang catches my eye (Color scheme).

But to each his own!

I was thinking about just modding the electronic setup. The body has some dings, but I'm not one to give a shit. :)

i did this project for under $100.
GFS lipstick tubes and pots and switch
ROBOG pickguard.
spraypaint from autozone

it looks alright and was pretty cheap too.

Yeah, I wanted to keep it under 200. I saw a really clean bullet mod that basically made me join this forum. I love musicmasters. I know some people aren't fans because of the lack of versatility, but if you crank them just right, they sound amazing. So the single coil neck pickup with master volume control is kind of a necessity. I rarely use tone knobs, so I want to make sure it's setup with just volume controls (blending, etc.)

Shit yes, I want to do the same sort of thing with p90s (ala doog) and a SX shortscale strat. Blue with tort is mega.
