Squier Duo-Sonic

I've been told it's pretty much the same thing to the mustang, as the Jagmaster is to the jaguar / jazzmaster? except it has a maple fretboard?

True?

If it is..

Would it be better if I go and get the mustang, or with a few adjustments could the Duo-Sonic be just as good?

I've tried out a bunch of guitars, but never seen the Duo-Sonic in stock, and I've always been looking to try it out, so if I can't try it out for myself, I just wanted to hear some opinions about it.

most of us on the board have owned the 90's duosonic at some point or another.
there is one we dubed the "ghetto sonic" and has been sold and passed around to three or four different members alone.
i have the orgional squier duo sonic from the 90's. not many were made over a 2 year span after the fender version was discontinued.
you used to be able to get the 90's duo sonics for under 100 bucks back in the jag-stang.com days. i think i got mine for about 140. now they fetch about 200-300 for one.

the main differences between the modern bling-sonic and the 90's duosonic are the fact that the 90's one is 22.5 scale and the new one is 24" like a jag/mustang.

while at 24" it is a conversion neck like the jagmaster V.3. im not sure if anyone has tried to slap a full scale neck on it yet to see how it works.

the new one also comes with white kluson style tuners (boner town) and mega gloss neck.

people on fenderforum have given the new pickups good reviews alnico 3's i guess are in them and they are smooth like baby shit.

I don't understand why Squier didn't just do this instead of re-inventing the 50's duo. At least they could have included all the non baby-shit colours that the 50's duo came in (like maroonburst!)

Since then I've had 2 duosonics, one I finally held on to.

I reeeeeally get along with it. My wife said the other day she really liked the tone. More than my telecaster. WTF?

it definitely has a unique "tone." the swimming pool style route makes it like a semi-semi-hollow. it actually has a decent amount of unamplified output.

The body is little tiny, even moreso than an original Duo Sonic, and for some reason that bugs me, even though it shouldn't because they can sound excellent.

Really though, they feel 10x more like a toy than an original Duo 1 (or 2) because of the midgetness.

I just got one of these two days ago. It's great out of the box and doesn't even really need much of a set up. It's my first short scale so I'm excited about that. I'm not really in love with the pickups, though. I've don't really have any experience with these guitars and I have no idea if the pickups are the same size as strat or tele or if they're some strange duo sonic size. Can anyone help with recommending some possible pickups to drop in? I tend to like a warmer tone more, but I'm open to anything.

I think maybe they restrung the one I played. maybe tens, I dont know, but it felt like a million bucks (give or take) and sounded like a KNIFE GUN. IN A GOOD WAY. It oly weighed like 5 pounds though, it was kind of strange.

I get paid tomorrow, so I'm going to a guitar shop to spend some money.

They ahve a JVM head there, so I'm going to ask if I can try out the guitar I'm buying through that (may as well, like).

They also have the Duo-sonic, and a Highway 1 tele. I think I'll try those out too, just because it'll be the only chance I have to play them with a decent amp.
