hi everyone (waves) & my 1st shortscale(s) arrive on fri

i asked a guy to give me a price on a squier duo-sonic and a squier musicmaster bass he had on ebay to end the auction early if i picked both up.
he gave me a figure below what i would have paid so i bit his hand off so to speak. just don't want to jinx it as he hasn't taken the auctions off yet but i've got to tell someone.

anyway, here's his pics from ebay, i'll post some better ones when i get them home on friday. just got to drive from newcastle to st. albans and back my car's pretty econonical though so it shouldn't cost much more than postage on 2 guitars would have been anyway.



£200 the pair seemed a good deal to me and i have a real love for unusual squires, my jagmaster is my most-used guitar, i pick it up more than any other*. dirt cheap and easy to put better hardware and pickups in.

* i haven't got a huge collection btw, this brings it up to 3 guitars & 2 basses

I think the duo is worth about £100 and the bass about £130, so you did well. Those prices are a bit of a guess though. In terms of playability they'll be easily worth that at least.

i'll see what they're like when i get them; the duo might need the pickups, pots and tuners replaced (maybe not though) but i think the bridge should be ok. the MM looks like i could keep it stock. i love matching headstocks, the only thing that would improve it could be a tortoiseshell scratchplate. just fantasizing at the mo though, i'll know more on friday, they'll probably feel/sound ace, i just like playing with what i've got .

i can't wait.

MiM is where they're made, where as Squier is the brand name. if you mean, a difference between Fender MIM and Squier what ever else, then I have no clue...

The Squier model started as the Fender model came out of production. You can probably account for the usual Fender/Squier discrepancies, such as quality of materials, quality of production, quality of overall finish. The guitars themselves, I imagine they're very similar, as it was Squier's first guitar in that shape. If you're not picky about brands and tonewoods and know how to set up a guitar, I guess you could call them the same.

anyways here is my squier duo sonic.



its amazing how much better this guitar looks once you get rid of the white plastic bits and replace them with black ones.

other differences:

Fender:
good replica slot head tuners
Squier:
shit, replaced them with chrome jag-stang tuners when i bought white plastic tips for the js.

electronic wiring is fine, don't need to me changed

as far as pickups go i couldn't really tell the difference. I yanked mine after about 2 weeks and replaced them with Seymour Duncan quarter pounder Jaguar pickups (SJAG-3 model #). those things totally over powered this little guitar. so i took those out and put the stock ones back in, then took them out again when i free'd up the mexican pickups from my black strat. now it has MiM strat pickups in it. sounds good.

i've had a week of playing them and i'm very impressed. the bass is the better of the two; very high quality, comparible feel-wise to my mexican jazz bass.
the duo feels like an affinity (which it is) but is still very playable, the maple board is super-smooth. a little odd to wrap my fingers around for chords being my first short scale but after i got used to it i really like it. a bit like getting out of a landrover and stepping into a mini, takes a few minutes to adjust.

the musicmaster has a YN6 serial number indicating it was made in '96 but as the range was launched in january '97 so i'm guessing its a vary early example. the pickup is really loud and punchy and the matching headstock and through-body strings really are extra special touches. i'm very pleased with this. the colour has faded to a nice cream, its very much whiter underneath the scratchplate.

the duo is '98 and a little darker than it appears in the pictures. it feels odd not having a contoured body but not uncomfortable. the tuners feel very cheap, they hold tuning but one or two rattle when you shake it so i'll replace them. the pickups seem fine, the one ply scratchplate feels a little cheap though.

i like the fact that they're kind of a matching pair, same body shape and bridge. i like the bridges a lot actually; my other guitars have strat style trems which i really dislike, these are simple and get the job done, but have a little style about them too.
