I like my Jekyll and Hyde pretty well, but it's really an overdrive....not a distortion pedal.

I've been really wanting a Box of Rock lately, though.

At the moment its a tie between the Behringer vintage distortion ($30) my odl faithfull, big muff clone

and Effector 13 Synth Mangler ($315) ULTRA beefy silicon fuzz with octave and noise powerz. Also very expensive, I got mine in a trade.

I dig a Fuzz Face through the right amp, but when I just need to grab and go I love the Big Muff. For better or worse, it sounds exactly the same through everything. My beat-to-hell Russian version still sounds the best to me.

I still haven't found any bass fuzzes as kickin as my Wooly Mammoth. Fuzz Factory works wonders with it as well, but for guitar I too enjoy the sizzle of a good Big Muff.

I've yet to find a dirt pedal that I like as much as Marshall amp OD.

Just a few thoughts...

Guitar:

-The Swede/Finns haven't lef the board yet: The BJF Dyna Red Distortion has proven to be my favorite mid-to-heavy overdrive for having so much gain yet still being a very musical, transparence OD at heart. Emerald Green Distortion Machine does a lovely old Voxy thing for the bridge pickup and loves to be preceded by a comp.

-The new Danelectro Cool Cat Distortion has been getting heaps of use...It absolutely loves the JCM2000 and has a lot of various drive tones well before it goes into fuzz. Some say it sounds too much like a DS-1...I disagree completely, it breaks up much more naturally and can almost clean up if necessary. Sooper cheap dirty tones!

-For a humping mids TS boob screamer type, the brown channel of the Blackstone Mosfet. It actually sounds really good on a clean amp and makes it seem like the tubes are cooking a natural load of nasalesque overdrive...If you've the patience to tweak the trimpots for necessary tone adjustments.

-As of late I've really dug my friend's OCD thru a Marshall 1974x, it makes his Tele sound enormously violent, albeit just a chunky overdrive.

-The OD-3 is still awesome for being the workhorse of overdrives. The unassuming yellow box is likely part of the magic.

Bass:

The Prescription Electronics Depth Charge(Bass fuzz, what Rochello has likely not tried yet  ) and Moollon Bass Drive (Bass Overdrive) give me plenty of dirt to work with, and for more fun I'll kick either of the two with a bass-boosted EQ and/or clean boost.

So true innit.

I do love the SD-1 by boss as far as overdrive/dist boxes go.

Don't get me started on fuzzes, I love them all.

Although these get close:

ZVex Box Of Rock
OLC Orange Peel
Marshall Guv'nor II
Fulltone OCD
Boss OD-3 Overdrive

These are all overdrive pedals. I'm not really into distortion and fuzz - well I like it all.

OLC's big cheese clone, the Chunky Cheese: I can't praise it enough.

Even though they're overdrives i'm still gonna say them....Ibanez Tubescreamer ts808 and a Danelectro Daddy-O pedal. I really don't think anything beats natural overdrive from a Vox or a Bassman though... but that's sorta in a different ball park.
