maple is considered to have a pretty bright tone. mahogany is on the warmer side of things. but my point really was just to keep in mind that they are not the same guitar just made for cheaper, there are actually pretty significant differences in their construction. in my opinion they are all great sounding guitars, it just depends on what you want.

Don't forget this readily available semi-acoustic Fender. I had an MIJ one for a couple of years, and liked it a lot. Admittedly, it's not your typical semi construction, and if you're going to go for it, might as well go the whole hog. Yamaha semis are meant to be great, but if I was going for one again, I'd buy a Casino.

I forgot to mention that after Bigsbies and sunbursts, I think F holes are seriously one of the ugliest things you can do to a guitar.

(Unless it's a ric style slash)

The main effect of the Tele Thinline is for the guitar to be lighter, more like a modern chambered body, and they just sorta stuck the goofy F hole on for fun. I'd take one with Wideranges, but only because it had Wideranges. It's called the thinline because... That's just sort of something that semi-hollows got called after Gibson made the 335, which was thinner than usual.

Forget about body woods and just play each guitar individually. Yes, you can generalize, but there are guitars that fall out of the spectrum of what they "should" sound like.

OK, for Jagermeister, my personal favourite type of semi-hollow guitar, with single coil pickups, no f-holes, and purple metalflake finish:

my Danos sound better to me than my Epi Elitist Dot (335 copy) ever did.

Lol, I like the Dano quite a bit, but I've never played one... J Mascis would have played it if he was a poor kid in the 60s, or was he...

The Gretsch is disgusting and makes me feel like I'm in the back seat of a 76 Thunderbird with one of those crappy tufted burgundy velour interiors, with no AC in 105 degree weather, driving through the junkyard with a hangover, severely wanting to throw up (I'm not kidding. That's the mental image I literally get)

It doesn't even have any sort of 'tron?

Fuck that. The only thing I like about it is the inlays and it having too many switches.

how can anyone say that the gretsch archtop is ANYTHING but sexiness defined? it rocks my asshole ten ways from sunday. i like gretsch guitars probably more than fender.

I'm meh, it only works if they have 'trons, and then every aspect of them is still ugly... unless they have some sort of ridiculous sparkly finish, then they're a bit excusable. Overload on them in the punk scene lately has cued me in to the fact that they are both not quite horrible sounding and extremely ugly.

This is Gretsch's name for its single-coil pickups, which appeared in about 1960 on its mid-level guitars, like the Chet Atkins Tennessean. These are larger than the Fender style single-coils and have more of a P-90 sound, with a shimmering high end and a rich, complex midrange. Unlike the FilterTron humbuckers, the HiLoTrons only had a single row of adjustable pole pieces.

Just looked like a normal bucker from the size of the pic...

That actually nearly sounds interesting.

It's a wide HP laptop display with the resolution set very high and brightness that doesn't go high enough for me, so I can see none of these apparent intricacies...
