Bought a Classic Vibe Jazz Bass

Post by jeff »

I needed a bass, and everyone posting about the great teles and strats made me want to try out something from the Classic Vibe series. I've been trying to find one around town since they were released, but then I got impatient and special ordered one from the big stupid store that I won't name. No different from Musician's Friend really, the shipping carton actually says "Musician's Friend" on it. But UPS and my landlord don't work together well, so this was the best option for me. Anyway...

I'll add more pics tomorrow when I have more time and better light, but after playing it for a little bit I can say that this does not feel like a $300 bass. The first thing I noticed is that the frets are really tiny! I'm not sure if that's good, bad or something that I'll just get used to. The neck is amazing, C shape with a slim profile, and I really can't believe how well the frets are finished. The quality of the neck is in every way equal to my MIJ '65 Mustang reissue, and it's better than the MIJ Mustang bass that I've borrowed for recording recently. This is basically going to be a recording bass for me, and it sounded great with some basic settings using Gearbox. I can't wait to get in front of an amp and really push some air!

The only negative thing I can say is that it's been impossible to get the plastic off from around the pointless but cool-looking thumb rest! I'll take it off tomorrow if I have a little more time, and maybe I'll get some gut shots if anyone cares.

that does look nice.

I need to get to a bigbox store and check these out. I don't really want a Fender style guitar but at the prices they sell for it still might be worth it.

I absolutely adore the neck finishes and overall quality of this series! Now that I've bought the Strat, I want them all. I've said it before, but these guitars rival the quality of any of my CIJ guitars.

That looks amazing.

I think I might buy a Squier Bass at some point, they're amazing.

Maybe they can turn out a Jazzy in some color other than 3T-burst or Black, since Fender wont bother.

I'm wondering if they'll do these in other colors if these first ones take off? Probably with a big price increase when they do.

I haven't seen any of the Classic Vibe series at Guitar Center at all. I wonder if they're afraid they'll outsell the Fender MIM Standards (which might have a higher margin)?
