International studio

Post by riotshield »

We are working with a Greek-German girl for vocals who is spending her time between Athens and Berlin.
I was wondering if there could be a way that we could sometimes rehearse while she's away in Berlin.

All that is needed is to send her a general mix audio singal from studio which she will have to hear through headphones and get back her vocals and feed into the console/monitors so we will hear in studio.

The only way I can imagine that happen is through some telephone connection/diy device but I the quality of the signal I think will make it hard for her to actually follow the studio action easily, and the vocals would be too lo-fi for the purpose.

With todays enormous internet speed/bandwidth I would expect that there could be a way to send and receive hi quality audio signal.
Skype and similar software have too compressed singal and long delays which means completely unusable for this use.

Do you have any ideas?

I think the latency (time taken for the signal to reach the far end) is going to make it impractical to try to do it real-time over those distances. She'll be singing vocals to a slightly delayed version of the studio sound and her voice will get back to you delayed by the same amount again, so to you she'll sound behind the beat by two transmission delay times.

Yeah, you guys will have to play slower for her to keep up. 8)

i have thought about this following solution:

some of our songs have a drum beat and stuff playing from a sampler, so what we could do is add some melody reference on the sampler like basic synth or guitar so she could sing on that and then send her signal of the sampler only. then us back here we are going to somehow delay the signal of sampler that goes to OUR monitors by the amount of time it takes sound to go to berlin and back and play in sync with her voice.

so she hears just the sampler and we then play on her voice which we will sync with the sampler that is heard in our studio.

it makes sense,no?
we just have to determine the amount of delay that we would need to apply...
