hey tim,
it's been ages since i've played a dist + and i have a craving for one. what are they like? demo?

Aw I can't demo nuffink as my digital camera only has really shakey video and lawd knows what the sound is like. I will attempt this though just to see how it comes out. If only to demonstrate that the Yun pedal does really work with it's comedy wiring.

The normal unadulterated mxr dist+ sounds like Celebrated Summer on this Hooosker Dooo myspace:

Some people rail on these pedals as they've got no tone control and can sound brittle or trebbly, but I think they're great for preserving the character of the guitar you're using and love the simplicity.

I would love to hear the Yun pedal, Tim-Tim.

I played a Distortion+ for the first time at Doogfest, NickD has a Vintage Script logo one. It sounded very nice. I know what Tim means, it has a fairly flat response so your guitar sounds like your guitar, only with a fuzzy-charactered Distortion on top of it, it does have a more high-end peaky content at high distortion settings but it's not ice-picky.

Basically I think it's Garage Rock in a box.

ok, well, I still have no clue how this one stands compared to the other dist+s but I got one on ebay for $18. yay, I love this thing. it is my favorite distortion pedal right now. it's like super versatile. it can do all kind of sounds from overdrive to distortion. it can even get a slight fuzzy quality to it driving my little tube practice amp.

Any chance of a shot of its innards? I've been fiddling inside these loads in the last few weeks. Just sold the kit I got from Musikding on ebay, but I wasn't happy with the stock sound (it was actually clean with both knobs at 12 o'clock) so I messed with the clipping diodes before I sent it out. Sonds very nice with mixture of silicon and germanium diodes.

Wow! I'll have to get one of these now. Does it sound anything like the original Dist+ or reissue? What's that big IC do? Look at all the diodes! There's absolutely tons of stuff not in the original circuit, like those transistors for instance.

The IC will be for the switching arrangement.

The diodes will most likely be in the power supply section, and I imagine the two outputs are Dry and Wet. Transistors will be an input buffer would imagine and to drive the LED.

Ah, so the active ingredients are most likely the same as the normal one!

Ah, so the active ingredients are most likely the same as the normal one!

Most probably, it's not like it's a complicated circuit or uses expensive components. There is no reason to change it, they just went cost-cutting crazy on the expensive stuff (switching etc).
