Ok, I started when I was 8 on a Harmony 3/4 size acoustic. After a couple years, my folks got me a student copy of a PBass, and a year later I got my first electric guitar, a Hondo SG Copy. It was pretty nice, and I wish I still had it. By the time I was 14 I was really into metal and got a no-name Flying V. I started learning how to swap pups with that and then learned about scale lengths (this was 25.3" as I learned while putting my first Khaler on). From there I was getting into pointy guitars, but my friend showed me his Antigua Mustang. Bonars. I bought my walnut about six months later. I started digging fenders because they were always cheap at pawnshops, you could always have one kicking around, I had a shit load of Mustangs that I paid around $75 for. I also really dug Charvels for their playability, and that hooked me on the Strat body shape. Somewhere in there I had that 72 Strat that was beat to shit, but I dug it as well.
I also got a Yamaha Bass for my sentence with Half Life.
After Half Life, I had my Bass, Charvel, and the first Mustang I bought. Then I really got into guitars in general, although I still lean heavily in the Fender court.

first guitar was an acoustic yamaha my mom had in her closet and never played (early onset of arthritis). i traded it for a wayne's world edition white cij strat w/ squier practice amp. at that point, all i wanted to do was play met0l rifFsz and be loud. i knew literally nothing about pickups, setups, amps, or even about playing guitar. . . just knew that i loved everything about it. got a takamine acoustic about a year later (still have it), and it was a good thing that it was also electric as my strat was stolen a few months later. when it came time the next christmas to get another guitar, i of course wanted another strat to replace the one ripped from my hands. so i got a mexican fat strat w/ a floyd rose ii system. . . still knew nothing much about guitars, but the humbucker got bigger RaWk TOANz than the standard strats. i also still have this guitar. about 2 years later i got a jag-stang because i wanted something totally different. the jstang fit that bill, but i didn't really care for the standard pickup. . . i also made a very unwise decision and replaced the tuners with sperzel's on the recommendation of an old bandmate. i also still have this guitar. my next axe was another fat strat, the american deluxe version. this was my first really nice guitar, and i loved the hell out of it. still being in a met0lz phase of sorts, i hotrodded the guitar with emg humbuckers. i wrote and recorded with it for several years. loved the tone, loved the neck, loved weight. . . everything was great. . . until i got tired of it and got a hamer standard. it was such a departure for me, and i kinda liked playing it. only problem was the neck really didn't suit my tastes, so i eventually sold it. then came the toronado which was another staple of mine for years. gibson scale'd but with a fender radius. loved it! next i went in for a '69 comp stang ri, and that guitar rocked as well. it was at this point that i picked up goth explorer from a friend just cos i liked how it sounded when i recorded it on our record. i played it at one practice and then sold it (split the profit with the guy who bro-dealt it to me). the '62 ri jaguar was the next guitar, and it was then that i became a full-fledged shortscaler. it just felt more comfortable. unfortunately, i made the mistake of replacing the bridge pickup and bridge, but i did end up playing that guitar at every saturday's child show for the last 18 months we were a band. then i switched it back to original configuration (along with all the other guitars i had other than the first fat strat) and proceeded to sell the american strat, toronado, and mustang for badly needed cash. the last guitar i bought (about 18 months ago) was an hh jag. i've loaded it with gfs p90's, and i've never been happier with a guitar's versatility and feel.
now that i know about scales, bridges, pickups, switches, pots, etc (a lot of which thanks to people here), i certainly feel like i'm better equipped at making decisions about gear. i've played a variety of instruments and know what it is i like about the ones that have stood out over the years.

....right.
First guitar I owned was a Les Paul copy around 1985, I think it might have a 'columbus'... it was horrible, made of plywood and was pretty impossible to learn guitar on...but I did learn my first basic chord shapes on that thing somehow....I bought it for £30 off a mate.
then around 87-88 I bought a Epiphone SG, it was nothing like the quality of Epiphones now, it sounded shit, but it was a little more playable than the columbus...I bought it out of my Mum's catalogue and paid it off weekly with my YTS money!! I think it was £99
when I started work for real around 1990 I bought my first half decent guitar, an Aria TA-40 (335 style semi) in cherry red. Bands like 'the wonder stuff' and 'ned's atomic dustbin' were using semi's so I thought they were cool guitars! this guitar I played for about 3 years all through the time with my first band...I paid £169 and loved that guitar.
after 3 years of abusing the TA-40 it was starting to get a little ragged, the frets were looking seriously worn and it was pretty shagged all round...I was thinking I might have to get something better...around 1993 I ended up swapping it for a limited edition MIJ squier 'hank marvin' strat. which I promptly sprayed blue (to look like Bob Mould's strat he was using in Sugar at the time) and scraped hanks sig off the headstock...I dread to think how much this would be worth now in good original condition, not too much I hope.
I played this strat for about 5 years, but I was growing to hate it.....and I was just about to join my mates punk band so I traded it in my local guitar shop for a epiphone les paul junior which I thought would be better......I always hated it though as it was red (not cherry red but bright red) so after that band collapsed on itself I traded that for a Squier telecaster....I never really like that though, it just felt nasty to me.
I ended up selling that and I was guitarless for about a year, I did it on purpose because I'd had enough of bands and I didn't want anyone trying to talk me into joining theirs!
around 2000 I really wanted to start playing again, start a band and all that...so I sold a load of my vinyl and went out and bought an Epiphone Dot 335, considering the only guitar I ever really loved was my Aria TA-40 semi I thought it would be a good choice....I played that for a year or two in a band, I was on the lookout for a backup guitar and an old Korean Squier Strat in vintage white popped up in my local paper for £40...I bought that and ended up playing it more than the Epi dot...
fast forward to last year and I can't stop looking at these Jagmaster's in sunburst with a tortoise plate for £182 from thomann.....I end up selling the Epi dot and buying a jagmaster....no regrets there, it's still the guitar I pick up more than anything.
This year a friend was coming over to stay from the USA, so obviously I had to get him to bring a guitar over!!! a guitar I've always liked is the squier venus and they are usually much cheaper and plentiful than over there than here, so we spend 4 months looking for a green one in good condition, but the right one never seems to come along......about 6 weeks before his arrival I get an email saying "would you be interested in this?" in the email is a link to craigslist where someone is selling a Japanese Mustang '69 RI in blue with tort plate....for $350....to me that's £175!!! I can't reply quick enough YES!!!!
I break the £40 strat into parts and sell the neck on ebay for £36 the rest makes about £40, so that was £76 towards the mustang....
so now I have the Mustang and the Jagmaster and I love them both for different reasons and both will stay with me now...and I also picked up a fender acoustic along the way.
I might buy myself a Fender Jazzmaster when the kids leave home, but I'm happy with what I have at the moment.....I don't really know if my tastes have changed much, I think I'm just realising what I feel comfortable playing now.

1996 - saved up some cash and got a Peavy Predator from the local music store in Slidell, Louisiana. Pickups were horrifically bad but it surprisingly stayed in tune quite well. Threw a hotrails in the bridge and later a little '59er so I'd have a backup guitar in case shit happened.
1998 - Gibson Nighthawk Special. After learning how to play I figured it'd be time to get a real guitar. It's a beauty with white binding and gold hardware
(not mine, just conveniently found this pic on the web).
2007 - Got more interested in the idea of a shortscale guitar (the Nighthawk is a 25.5 scale) and found a great deal on a 1965 Mustang. It was the complete opposite of the 'Hawk, not just in scale but in tonal capabilities. Thanks to a push-pull coil tap I've got 10 different settings on the Nighthawk which is great but I wanted something simpler as a change in pace.
2008 - Cyclone because, well, I had some cash and why not.

1993 - i started with my dad's old harmony acoustic that he picked up when he was about 14/15 (i still have it.) it did the trick for a while and when my love of the guitar overtook my love of playing hockey.
1994 - i sold pretty much most of my hockey equipment and was madly in love with the sound Dave Navarro had on the Jane's Addiction albums, so i picked up an Ibanez EX series thing (aka super strat.. and the only strat type guitar i've ever played) i got a crappy little peavy rage 45 watt practice amp with it and picked up my first big muff at the same time, i had wild dreams of being this Mark Arm/Dave Navarro guitar player.. mad thrash with walls of sound.. so i guess J mascis.. but anyways.
1995 - i finally realized that guitar stores had things called Lay-a-Way so i bought a 72 Harmony Les Paul copy, the DiMarzio pups blew me out of the water, and i found myself trying to bring the funk like Hillel Slovak did on the early chili pepper albums. it also became my sticker guitar for a while, as i attempted to bring the kurdtz out of it.. but in `95 that was bad form in the backwards town i came from.
1997 - i bought what is now my noise master off of a buddy for $50.00 essentially a full scale mustang clone from japan that he was given by an old teacher of his, i found it out in a storage shed in his parents back yard.. it never stayed in tune, onlyt made odd noises and squealed like a bastard, i fell in love with it right away.. its now on its 4th neck... (i have no idea how i found necks that fit the original pocket though, i think i used to just cut off the but of the neck until it fit..)
2002- bought a new ibanez acoustic, ended up putting a single coil in the hole and direct wiring it to an output jack. it sits in my jam space, although there is a YouTube video of a live show where i opened up solo folk styles for a metal gig.
2004 - my first fender, and oddly an acoustic bass. i had just broken up with my fiance and figured i hadn't really played in a while, and the last band i had been in broke up in 1999, so i wanted to learn bass, so i bought it. now i use it when recording or writing new songs, and eventually will use it to teach the girlfriend how to play bass (she bought an artcore bass last year.. but that is a different story)
2006 - my `65 mustang i'd wanted one for years and years and years, and it just fell into my hands, a dude needed to sell it to pay rent, and it had been stripped of its orig finish (red) so i got a great deal on it, and its my main guitar.
2007 - after getting the 65 i needed another mustang to abuse so i picked up a `71 on the bays that had unfortunately been modified with locking tuners but i love the new active pups, i used it for most of the live gigs with the ICBMs, around the same time i ran into a budy of mine whose Tele elite had been gathering dust in his apartment for 5 years, and since we used to jam back when we were kids and remembering how much i liked it he offered it to me for next to nothing, obviously i bought it. as i'd been thinking about a tele for a while. i also grabbed a cheap harmony from some guy around the same time, used it to record some serfx stuff, its whereabouts are currently unknown , but i'm sure its just a phone call away. Mid summer i stopped in at this super shady guitar shop that was across the street from the book store i was working at and above the venue i was trying to run, and picked up a jazz bass clone with a spare neck off the guy, it has some super mad mojo. I also wandered intot eh source and picked up a cheap first act for the pure purpose that i thought it looked like a shirt scale, but upon further investigation it was not. At year end i wandered into a yamaha shop in the worlds worst mall (WEM) and spotted a jagmaster, picked it up played it for 3 hours and decided that it was for me.
2008 - building my projects so far, i had a 74 stang body kicking around, i now have a duo neck for it, so its in the works, the noise master rebuild, i attempted to buy vox amp from a cat on here, but turns out that it was not meant to be and he disappeared like a fart in the wind and i was out a hundred bones. however it didn't freak me from sweet bro deals (i grabbed some pups from James just after that) and i'm gonna snake bassintoms duo-sonic and add some black robroes on it for covers but keep the current pups for awesome shortscale.org history.
somewhere in there i got rid of my crap amp picked up a fender twin, and modded it so that i can also use it as a cab form my 4x12 and aquired loads of pedals and recording gear.
however at the end of the day i think my goal of playing super fast thrash punk is still what i'm trying to do, just in different forms
and i now prefer to call it sludgy warehouse thrash
i took photos of some to put up, so i may edit this and toss in some hidden stuff.

Squire Affinity Strat
Squire Telecatser Custom Deluxe type thing
Ibanez RG5EX1
Well it started out when my sister got a cheesy acoustic which i ended up playing more than her, then i went out with my dad to the mom+pop guitar store and ended up leaving with a Squire Affinity Strat. I was always attracted to the Strat and fender single coils. This is still my main guitar and i love it, the neck feels great, the only turn-off is the agathis body. I then got a GFS prewired pickgaurd when they were on sale, but replaced the ceramic pickups with Lace Sensors [B/S/R]. Since my SRV obsession, this has been my main guitar, strung up w/ 13s and dropped down 1/2 step
I then got really into Tele's, but wanted rock power, so i started looking for a tele with humbuckers. I ignorantly overlooked the Squire Tele Deluxe, even though it was exactly what i was looking for at the time [which i still kick myself for not getting]. But ended up with this odd find, a Squire Telecaster Custom Deluxe type thing [HH,V/T, 3-way]. The guitar sounded pretty damn good, but at the moment it's deconstructed and i have been sanding it now and then, with intentions to refinish it white, and put hot pickups in it, and wire like a les paul/tele deluxe.
Then i got my first main-stream guitar, although a lower end one. A Ibanez RG5EX1 which i bought on a whim and might sell. The wizard necks are really too thin for my taste and i'm uncomfortable with the floyd rose in it. It does sound really good, but it just doesn't fit my playing style.
Plans are to sell the Ibanez to fund the Tele and a nice tube amp.
awesome thread by the way

Lordee, I go back sfaras 1969, that's when I started. There's a fucking Stooges song called that. That ages me.
Anyways.
Crappy acoustic
Better acoustic
Jedson Teleish abortion with very bad reverb handle
Antoria Les Paul cop - v good guitar, still got it stripped down to a Mick Ronsonish appearance
1965 Fender Strat - bought for £175, sold 6 years later for £225: what the FUCK was I thinking?
Hamer something or other - bought while a bit pished in Denmark St, swopped for a...
Fender Tele s/b rosey neck - v nice guitar indeed
Gretsch Tennessean - looked fantastic. I'd a got a better sound playing the fucking case. Sold!
Gibson SG Special - brilliant guitar, played itself
Gibson SG Standard w/Bigsby - ditto
Epiphone 225 - pretty good 335-style box, used on loads of records. Smashed into 42 pieces.
Hondo er...Fat Boy? Sold!
Squire Strat. Nice.
Ibanez Artcore - really nice, never got on with the neck, but.
Gretsch 5120 - put in Filtertrons - best guitar with 'buckers EVER. Feeds back briliantly.
Fender CIJ Jag. Love it.
Fender Baja Tele. Cube that love.
I'd like a LP Junior now and that's all. Th Epi 57 reissue is a piece of work if you get onto one. Gotta flog the Artcore first, but.
Conclusion 1: the only Gibsons I ever liked were SGs. I like Fenders and Gretsches mostly.
Conclusion 2: that's a fairly modest lineout of guitars for nearly 40 years' playing. Guess I didn't really give too much thought to most of 'em at the time.

This thread got me thinking if other people on here get srsly bored of the Fenders sometimes, like as if you feel obliged to use them? Its an odd feeling i get now and then, "Yawn.. another Offset, Short scale, matching headstock...". I sometimes feel like vaulting the lot of mine and buying a PRS lol.

Lolz, (locking in a vault for another day). Its just a passing thought, when you've been online waffling on about Jags and Jazzys daily for like 5 years i'm sure some of the older posters may feel the same from time to time.stewart wrote:dibs on your 60s jag...Fran wrote:Easier way = Keep your JSMore Cowbell wrote:Just to piss off mike.

I totally feel this at times, and I guess that it was one of the reasons for starting this thread. I certainly want to try different things and a Fender doesn't always fill the void.Fran wrote:Easier way = Keep your JSMore Cowbell wrote:Just to piss off mike.

The new Melody Makers are awesome and cheap, simplicity with epic tone, something the Junior was credited for.
Lamp, do what i did. Get a BC Rich Warlock, its a great antidote lol. Srsly though, i do have the BC but its an entry level guitar tbh, like a fool i've sold stuff like a Gibson, Gordon Smith and Westburys in the last year that were always good for that different mood. Bah.
