I learned on a cheap guitar - my Dad's Kay acoustic, which had its action set about 1 1/2 off of the fretboard. If I can give any positives to that experience it's that my finger strength developed pretty fast. It would've been sweet to have a little shortscale instead.

Reminds me I have a tiny intercom unit which sounds like a Big Muff when you plug in a guitar to the jack - might be helpful!
