USA BMPi

Bought one of these last night, got it home, and ran straight to electric lady land
how satisfied are you with your big muff? usa, russian, livesley, whatever you have it

just a question i have about it, is there anything i can do about the lack of volume on hand and is it true bypass?

as of tomorrow, this will be my setup as soon as mikes box of rock arrives

Morely Wah > Danelectro Vibe [cool cat] > Box of Rock [Livesley] > USA Big Muff > Danelectro Tremolo [cool cat] > DD-3 > Boss RC-20XL > amp

but yeah, rant on about your big muff and pro's and cons of it =)

I still like my old Russian one the best - the USA version seemed a bit to brash for me. The Russian one is total doom sludge.
The USA has true bypass though, so that's one thing.

Tonez for tonez, you can't get me off of the Behringer VD. Closest thing I guess is the USA bmp. But the behringer has a crap switch, a crap bypass, and leakage problems.

I'm more a fan of the Green Big Muff version, but the NYC one has it's place, I thin kthey're better than the version I owned, which was only unity volume when maxed out.

I really like the way an NYC Muff sounds with all the diodes pulled out.
Makes them sound real brash and a fuckload louder.

It's louder because you're not clipping the signal and removing content.

If you remove them you lose distortion artifacts but increase volume.

I had a US BMPi and never really gelled with it. Was fun to mess around with, but not something I would use with the band much. Euan has it now.

I do like a muff: I used to have a Little Big Muff reissue, which was a great little pedal, but had to go in the great gear purge of '07. I received a StressFX Ram's Head clone in a trade (he sells on eBay, very good fella) and I love it to bits - nothing sounded better through my Tiny Terror: I like to keep the Sustain fairly high and roll the Tone off almost completely - it's like being able to play the foghorn. They also sound surprisingly good with the tone at max through a square-wave trem, nice harsh 60's-sounding fuzz. Other party favourites include running it into my octave fuzz (just thinking aloud, Mike, but how easy would it be to build an octave circuit, a la the foxx tone machine, into a muff circuit?) and I'm also planning to build a Green Ringer to run into my fuzz.

So there: nice fuzz.

I would probably just go the Green Ringer route, the Foxx Tone Machine is a somewhat unique approach to Octave which I can't claim to fully understand, and a Green Ringer can be built on a very small board and be used to smack it.

i've got a green sovtek clone mike built me and i like it. it's dark and subtle.

i've also got an NYC one and i like that too. it's not subtle.

the only thing that pisses me off about muffs is how noisy they are when engaged- they hum a lot.

i like to think i can do stuff like that. i get as far as opening it up, looking inside and going "er... oh dear" then put it back together and forget about it.

i have a black russian one. i got it back in middle school and still use it almost daily. easily my favorite of all the muffs i've tried.
i've compared it to the green russian ones and found that there is only a 1 resistor value difference between them. i've heard there is more in the newer black ones. i think mine was a transitional unit.

holly stain i just smashed the muff into a square wave trem lol and it stayed like that for a good hour
but yeah, i can see this new muff being on my board for QUITE a long time, really happy with it

but volume loss issues? anything i can do to change that ??

YARR. Sounds like quite a holy stain, even if only in jest.

A nice green abbreviated BMP in the British Petroleum crest mark would be sweet for t-shirts and stickers. Or maybe a Muff clone? Heck, a Big Muff through some solid state amps have a pleasant diarrhea splurt about them...

Of course, other options come to mind...
