Recommend me an inexpensive self-oscillating delay
I'm interested in being able to create clean feedback, but at a reasonable volume. I'm thinking a self-oscillating delay might work (at least the vids sound like what I'm after). What's a good, sub-$100 box that can do runaway repeats?
1. I'm pretty handy with mods and circuit building, just no SMD pedals if they need to be tweaked
2. Analog v. Digital = don't care
3. Used/OOP stuff is cool as long as it's common
4. No EHX (no offense to the rep, I just can't jibe with huge boxes and the XOs are all SMD)
I've seen Artec and Johnson analog delays on eBay for $45 or so, will they do what I'm after?

behringer vintage delay
this video is all made from the oscillating delay being tweaked with other pedals at teh end of the video.

I've not played any of the new EHX stuff, but you know there are some quality SMD pedals right? The Zoom UltraFuzz is SMD.DuoSonicBoy wrote:4. No EHX (no offense to the rep, I just can't jibe with huge boxes and the XOs are all SMD)
Shabba.
It's just cause I have a compulsive need to modify everything - I know most delays can be tweaked to self-oscillate; I just didn't want to get anything that needed tweaking and find out later that it's SMD.Mike wrote:Surface Mount Device - i.e. ultra small chips/transistors/resistors/caps.timhulio wrote:SMD?
it's a stupid reason to decide to not like something. Try using your EARS.
The Dano Tremolo is SMD, and I love that thing to death.

Just get one that DOES self oscillate. You've asked for a self-oscillating delay and that's what people are recommending.DuoSonicBoy wrote:It's just cause I have a compulsive need to modify everything - I know most delays can be tweaked to self-oscillate; I just didn't want to get anything that needed tweaking and find out later that it's SMD.Mike wrote:Surface Mount Device - i.e. ultra small chips/transistors/resistors/caps.timhulio wrote:SMD?

The Behringer does and if you don't want long delay times it is the way forward.

the vintage delay doesnt need to be tweaked to oscillate. although it has trim pots if you wanna tweak it.

Delay time and sample threshold. They'll be optimised to have the longest good sounding delay, you can fuck with them but it's worth marking the original stock settings.Zaphod wrote:What do they adjust?Hurb wrote:the vintage delay doesnt need to be tweaked to oscillate. although it has trim pots if you wanna tweak it.
yar..I messed with them but behrinegr have it pretty much spot on for what I wanted out of it.Mike wrote:Delay time and sample threshold. Alright, so I'm looking at these:
Behringer VD400 = dirt cheap, but plastic (flame away, I'm just old fashioned)
Artec = $20 more, but metal and true bypass
What's the winner? I suppose economically I could buy almost 2 Behringers for the cost of the Artec, so that almost balances out the durability.
I also found a cheap BOSS DD-3, though I suppose that doesn't do anything cool?

Oh for fuck's sake. Just watch Hurb's Behringer Construction video and feel right ASHAMED of yourself. I have the VD-400 on my board, it's not going to break. The Plastic is (and I quote) Strong As Shit.DuoSonicBoy wrote:Behringer VD400 = dirt cheap, but plastic (flame away, I'm just old fashioned)
I don't know about the Artec's, I think it was them that lied about stuff like Bypass and Analogue/Digital.
The Behringer is confirmed Analogue, if that matters to you (I imagine it does, judging by the corks wedged in your nostrils)
