Not to sound like an insufferable know-it-all...
...but, my friend, Fender (and all the other big companies out there) is about two things:
1. Selling dreams
and
2. The ever-present profit margins
You say "Fender" to your typical Joe Schmo out there and one image will pop in their heads: Jimi Hendrix with that Olympic White Strat.
We gearheads on this board may lust after the more "obscure" guitars: Mustangs, Jaguars, Duos and the like. But to everyone else out there, it's all about the Les Pauls, Strats and (in rarer cases) Teles.
Bottom line? Fender ain't after OUR money.
They have it ALREADY...and they will have it for as long as we live. Some people lust after cars. We salivate over planks of wood that go "twang."
What they WANT is to GROW their customer-base.
And the best way to do that is to give the "typical" customer what they want: a shiny new Strat.

At least these days there's a good enough after-market scene that you can basically build whatever you want, not to mention the cool peeps out there who are willing to share thier knowledge and help others out. We live in a pretty choice time for people who have a passion for guitars that are a little out of left field.
