Well........since I bought a couple of pedals last week I thought it would be a good idea to add a tube buffered fx loop to my home built Marshall 2204. I looked around online for a decent schematic and found one at the same place I originally got the 2204 layout from. Unfortunately I couldn't track down all the parts locally so I ordered a "kit" from Torres Engineering. They only sell it if you call them because they say it's an advanced mod. I felt pretty confidant that I could get it to work, but when I opened the package and read through the "instructions" I quickly realized that there were some big gaps in the way they explain how to install it. I ended up building it once following their layout and it didn't work, then I looked at the schematic that came with it and drew my own wiring layout and viola!.......it worked.
It's got switch jacks so it is supposed to bypass it's self when there is no cord plugged in, but for some reason it's not doing that for me. a simple patch cord from the send to return is not a big deal to me since I don't want to be bothered to pull it all apart again even though I'm sure that I wired up the switch wrong. The plus is that for some reason it's got a shit load more volume than before. I think it has something to do with the pots that adjust the levels, but when the amp is on 1 1/2 it's fucking LOUD, like it used to be on 4.
Hmmph.....I'm not going to question positive results :]
Here is a before pic and then a couple of after with the new circuit and tube..
I added an fx loop

I added an fx loop

I kind of thought that, but wasn't too sure. When ever I hear "additional gain stage" I think of the Mesa mod for Marshalls. The loop I put in is between the tone stack and power side of the amp wired into the master volume pot, so thankfully it doesn't alter the tone at all. For now I have the send and return pots set at half way and it seems to have tamed the extra volume.Sloan wrote:Sometimes the FX Loop acts as an additional gain stage, that could be the extra volume your experiencing.
