Amp shopping
Ok, I have a tiny Vox Cambridge which I love and suits home practicing very well. However, I may be able to join a band that I really like soon, so I'm looking now for a louder amp to use at gigs. The other guitarist uses a Marshall half-stack, so I need something at least 60-watts.
On one hand, I'd like to just drop the coin to do it right the first time and get a Fender Twin, buuuuut I don't exactly have that kind of coin right now.
I saw this on CL and thought it might do the trick:

I have a gutted cab I just need to buy speakers for already, it had been on my TODO list. I'm thinking about $400 would get me set if I went that route. Yes? No? Opinions?

Re: Amp shopping
If he's running a 4x12 at 100 watts (I'm guessing - you didn't say), he's only 25% louder than you'd be at 50 watts through a 4x12. Don't know if it saves you any coin, but 50 should be plenty as long as he's not diming his master. Even if you got a 25 watt, if he runs at half and you run wide open, you should still be plenty audible.PenPen wrote:Ok, I have a tiny Vox Cambridge which I love and suits home practicing very well. As for that head, I don't know. I'm in a similar situation. If you're looking Fender, you can pick up a used Hot Rod Deville combo for around $500, I believe. So it wouldn't be that much more and it'd be in better condition. That's the direction I'm probably heading, I just need to decide if I want 4x10 or 2x12.
Just my 3.5 cents.

and if you're looking to get that fender clean for less money, consider a bassman 50 or 100 head. they can be had for $350 - 500, and then all you need is a decent 2x12 or 4x10 for another couple hundre bucks. when i put together the bassman rig i sold to junkbox, i think i spent a total of $700 and ended up with a 100 watt, 4x12 half stack loaded w/ celestions.

Steve, There is a 4x10 hot rod on craigslist in La Jolla with casters for 440. (probably 400 cash out the door...) I saw you post and thought I'd let you know.Dogma Hollow wrote:If he's running a 4x12 at 100 watts (I'm guessing - you didn't say), he's only 25% louder than you'd be at 50 watts through a 4x12. Right on, thanks! The cash is the tough part for another week or two, but maybe he'll take paypal.mickie08 wrote:Steve, There is a 4x10 hot rod on craigslist in La Jolla with casters for 440. No big deal. I just read your post and saw the add 5 minutes later. I LOVE the 4x10. I am not a fan of the hot rod's distortion/OD (it can be useable) but I just use pedals anyways.. But, 400 cash for a 4x10 fender tube combo with reverb and stuff is where it's at. Damn I miss my super reverb.... At least Chico still has it.... ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

I did a little more searching and found this also:

I'm a little torn. $725 sounds a bit high with a busted 'verb, but I've heard these amps are the shit.

Well, I couldn't pass it up. That was the cleanest Hot Rod DeVille 410 I've seen outside of a showroom. Only 2 minor issues. One worried me a bit initially, because the back of the amp case that comes down over the tubes was bent in slightly. Had to check the tubes over really close, listen for any rattle, etc., and no problems. The bend didn't look like it was caused by a hard impact, more like it was laid on its back with something under it that put some pressure on it. So I'm not concerned. The other was purely cosmetic and on the inside, so not even an issue. For $400 I couldn't pass it up.
Mickie, thanks again for the tip! I wasn't even planning to look again until this weekend.

I bought the Univox head last night. It sounds fairly good, its rated 100w but sounds closer to 60w, which will do the jorb. It's also not super heavy. Now I just need to finish the 2x12 cab, I'm looking at some Emminence Legend 12"ers.
