Can I put an upright bass with a piezo pickup through this amp and not explode stuffs?
does i need a little preamp thing too?

I should have thought that'd be fine, but a preamp will make it sound an awful lot better.

Can Mike build preamps?

yeah donk has a new hillbilly busking partner, a guy called Tim who plays upright bass, we've jammed twice now on some johnny cash, steve earle and emmylou stuff and it's a whole load of fun and working great.

also, i really need to learn to play lead.

i have this "country rock" lick book/cd that's amazing. it has lots of those pedal-steel sounding licks and you really can apply most of these in country AND rock type stuff.

Would an upright bass really need amplification against just an acoustic guitar?

i can hear him at practice when we're both acoustic, in the pub where we have a gig lined up there isn't a cat in hell's chance
(for which we will use a mains powered bass amp, but we need some kind of preamp to get any kind of volume from the piezos, i could use my mic preamp for this)

but eventually we want to busk for fun and a little cash so some kind of battery powered amp and preamp setup will be essential - i've tried the piezo straight into an amp and it gives very little volume

Yes, it would work, but also, yes, a preamp would be a great idea too. You can buy
battery-powered preamps that plug straight into an 1/8" jack, and have an 1/8" jack-out as well.

I'm pretty certain over the years I've been in a live band situation where a non-active cheapy acoustic guitar with piezo has been put into the PA without any extra gear..

I think the bigger problem would be the little speaker not enjoying the low end the bass is putting out- 'spesh piezos which have a very broad frequency range.
