Open back vs. Closed back 1x12 cab w/ Vintage 30

Post by Armchair Bronco »

I have a cube-shaped Avatar 1x12 open backed cab loaded with a G12H30. I play my Orange Tiny Terror through this.

I'm thinking about buying the Egnater Rebel 20 head, so I'm looking to get another Avatar 1x12 cab, this time with a Vintage 30 speaker (the Hellatone 60). Should I get one with an open or a closed back?

I like the convenience of an open back cab for carrying cables 'n' stuff when I'm jamming, and I'm wondering whether either version makes much difference in a cab this small? If not, I'll definitely go with another open backed model.

I would go with the closed back if you are keeping both just for variety. The closed back will give you more bass and "fuller" sound typically. An open back will gave you more highs and "clarity" to some degree.

do they make them with the easily removable back plate?
I think it would be great have it open up and lock like a cabinet door or something - that way you could still keep stuff in it!

Good idea.

I should just get an open backed model, then put some kind of hinged plywood door over it. Maybe I could use some sticky-backed foam around the edges to seal things up nicely and use a few tiny rare-earth magnets as a locking mechanism. Then I could go either way.
