guild GAD JF30

Post by mellowlogic »

So I've been looking for a nice acoustic guitar on the bay lately. I've been playing a crap oscar-schmidt since the 90's that i've been to embarassed to even post pics of.

In browsing the selection of Guilds over the last few weeks I've been seeing a ton of these
http://cgi.ebay.com/Guild-GAD-JF30-Blon ... 286.c0.m14

Sorry for the long link, I tried 3 times to use the encapsulated link thing but I guess I'm retarded

What's the story, why are so many people selling this specific model? Do they just suck?
I realize that the prices on these are real cheap 500-700usd and this is because these are like factory seconds, but it still seems like a nice deal for a guild with solid top/sides/back.

Anyone know anything about these?

Hah, I have an Oscar Schmidt from teh 90's as well. Got it for less than $150, if I remember right. Oddly enough, it holds tune extremely well, the action is comfortable and I haven't had any problem with it. As for the sound...well, you get what you pay for.

I just bought one of these a few weeks ago. I think the sticker on it was $699 (used), but I had a store credit from some trade-in gear so I paid less. It definitely doesn't suck. I haven't had a chance to take pictures yet, but I can try to do that later if you're interested. The only difference from the one in the eBay link is that mine has a clear plastic pickguard. I love the maple back and sides.

I would guess that you're seeing a lot of these at low prices because 1. the economy is in the crapper so people are selling off their gear, and supply is greater than demand, and 2. it might not be holding its value as well as some other acoustic guitars because it's made in China, and 3. it doesn't have any built in electronics. If none of those things bother you, then I think it's a great value for the money.

Okay, here are some pictures of mine. Sorry the quality isn't great, my apartment isn't so good for lighting.

The neck is comfortable and the frets are very well finished, which is really important to me. There's one slightly sloppy glue spot where the fretboard meets the body, but other than that the workmanship is perfect. The strap button at the bottom of the guitar is made of plastic, and is not glued in so it would be very easy to install a jack for a pickup. Hoping to get around to that soon...

I think you could make a transatlantic ocean voyage in the case, it's that well-made. So try to get one that comes with the stock case.

When it comes to sound, I think it is a little less boomy and bass-heavy than most jumbos because of the maple back and sides.
