Pretty cheap, though make sure you check out the 3rd pic down on the left as it suffers from the 70s neck pocket problems.

I like the colour, I wonder how good the quality of the refinish is. Can't tell in the pictures, and its described as an 'Orange Peel' effect.
There's another '78 musicmaster at Â£255 on there which I'm watching. 2days left though, and 5 bidders.

orange peel is bad, its caused by a number of different things.
sometimes its bad wheather, sometimes its just a bad painter, and yet other times its caused when the gun or can spits or is not set right.

Just got it. It really is rather nice. One thing, it weighs a ton. I've never owned a guitar that heavy. It could be the refinish or just the wood. What wood were the 70's musicmasters made from?

It's pot luck with the 70s guitars, wood wise at least. My 78 was pretty light but I tried out a Mustang i a guitar shop and it was crazy heavy.

I remembering reading somewhere that due to the demand in the 70s companys were making so many guitars that they started using more wood that they usually wouldn't. There are always a lot of Les Pauls from that era doing the rounds, they're normally pretty cheap (for a LP) and they always weigh a ton.

The grain looks pretty nice underneath. I've read that walnut is a heavy wood, not sure if it looks like it though.

I'm tempted to strip it down to bare wood and see if it's as heavy. The finish looks thick, it can't be nitro (could it

Just leave it for a week or 2, it might not seem so bad once you get used to the difference. What do you usually play?

I'm now fairly certain it's walnut. I checked out some pictures and descriptions and it's got to be!

I normally play a '66 Mustang (poplar) and it's much lighter. It feels very different to the musicmaster ...

i don't think stripping the finish is going to make an awful lot of difference to the weight, to be honest. it'll just take a while for you to get used to it.

Yeah, I think I'll leave it. Now I know it's the walnut that's the heavy part and not the paint. It's actually a really nice finish, except for the 'orange peel'. I'll try and sand it out methinks ...

Feels like it on my Strat strangely. Or maybe the swapped neck made the difference.

When I think about it, my Squier super-sonic has the thickest paint of any guitar I've seen and it's light compared to the musicmaster.

Just found this:

The one on the right is a musicmaster bass from the same year (found the pic on t'internets) and the finish is practically identical to the one I got from ebay. Is there a chance it's not refinished, and it just came with the crappy 'orange peel' straight from the factory?

that was a finish option offered by fender in the late '70s. as to why it's orange-peeled, i have no idea.
