can you post pics of the orange peel so we could get an idea of how bad it is? if it's the original finish then obviously you'd want to leave it. i've got a 78 musicmaster and it certainly isn't walnut. the wood's ugly as fuck. so if they've used walnut there's a good chance that the original finish was translucent...

Awesomeo. I just took the neck off; It is indeed the original finish. I'll try and get pics of the orange peel tonight.
