I'm pretty sure he did. But he uses Les Pauls loads as well, so he's never been just a singles guy.

Yeah, he's full of flaws, is Knopfler.

Twisting By The Pool is a classic example.

That's reminded me, I'll upload a picture of his amp. It was a Reinhardt? I think. Very pretty, but I didn't get a great shot of it really.

Wicked, Royal Mail has been awesome in my experience. Every time I send something 1st class it gets there the next day.

Yeah, i'm shocked i never bought one of these before

I was'nt bothered till i saw your demos.
I got instant 'powerage' AC/DC sound with everything halfway, then it goes all the way tp Metallica. The low end is brilliant, especially for guys like me that cannot carry a 4 x 12 about with them.

Yeah definitely, it's full of classic Marshall roar and the EQ is fantastically versatile.

I never really gelled with humbuckers. I recently sold a PRS Custom 22 'cos it just sounded so ..boring and muddy, that might've been the Dragon II's though. I found some nice marriage of the, er, bigness? Of humbuckers and the clarity and spank of singles with the G&L MFD pickups, I can't recommend them enough. I recently bought an Edwards Les Paul though and I'm loving it, but that may be due to the fact I love the woody plonk Les Pauls have.

I want to buy an Hss or even (the better) HsH strat, and rplace the hums with two singles each, than wire one neck, and one bridge pickup to a volume pot, and a three way switch. Than have the guitar be a stereo guitar. Its just an idea, and I wont follow through with it, but I think it would be neat.

single in the bridge for fuzz definition, bucker in the neck for bassy overdriven rhythm. overwound single, vintage bucker. for me these are the uses for these pickups.

don't play clean, ever. but if you have to, the neck bucker with delay and verb sounds cool.

EDIT: oh shit, i just dug up an old thread with a stupid comment that doesnt really matter. sorry all, i shouldve checked the date.

nawz, it's cool. while there's a lot of snobbery going on, at least the bulk of that is backed up with reasoning behind those opinions.

also, i think i should get my emg hot-rod'd strat from st jimmy and dew up a demo. it's got an 81 humbucker in the bridge and SA-1 singles in the neck & middle. . . all active. . . all fucking awesome. if anything, my musical tastes have simply changed since the days of that guitar. i prefer the more organic tones you get from passives. if asked to describe the differences, though, i'd say for starters, that active pickups will give you a measured, reliable response. that's not to say that they are not expressive. . . on the contrary, the 25k pots and super-hot circuitry are very sensitive to pick attack. they just seem less wild and wooly than regular coils. one of the main reasons i installed them so many years ago was that it is pretty much impossible to get microphonic feedback from emg's. crank the gain, crank the volume, and stand right in front of your speakers, and they'll never squeal back at you. you can still get gobs of the feedback we all love, and i think it's actually easier to achieve this in the studio with active pickups because, again, they never go 'phonic on you.

anyway, i like hamburger. i like sushi. i like ice cream. i like salads. i like whiskey. i like them all for different reasons.

You are one of a kind you handsome devil. Most guitar companies do it the other way round due to the neck pickup being louder by placement and the bridge pickup being naturally treble sounding. Cannot disagree with single coil definition w/fuzz though.
