both single coils most of the time, occasionnally just the bridge pickup for single note stuff than needs more bite/nasal tone on my stang. never really the neck one alone.
on my hondo i sometimes use the neck one alone with the tone knob rolled all the way back and lots of fuzz for qotsa like tonez (single note stuff behind the twelfth fret basically)

Bridge humbucker unless I'm recording clean parts, then its the mini humbucker in the neck. Sometimes I'll split the bridge coils for leads. I will say that after using the bridge pickup for ages I'm starting to get more attracted to using the neck pup but I haven't made the switch yet.

I really love the sound of the neck pickup on my SSS strat. On the Mike-strat I use the Bridge pup (JB JR) as the reason I have it in that guitar is because i Dont have a Hum equipped guitar. I used to use the neck on my Jaguar too but I loved the bridge pup on my tele, it sounded like no other guitar.
I never really use any combinations of pickups except when I'm playing (and fucking up) little wing or something with that "sound".
Oh and when I had my Jag-stang I was a grunge-choad so used the bridge pickup because single coils "sucked".

generally I love the bite from bridge singles. but I quite like neck humbuckers at times.
if you really hate the 2 and 4 positions you can just wire it with a 3-way switch, vintage strat style.
I usually set the neck with the tone rolled off, the middle with no tone and then just use the 5 way switch to quickly select whatever tonal option I choose. I used to hate the in between positions too but I've started to appreciate them more recently. they sound like a pretty bright humbucker, almost like a gretsch.Susano wrote:There's something very tight and reedy sounding about the inbetween strat settings that just irritate me.Progrockabuse wrote:the strat is really strange, i tend to only use either the neck or the bridge. never really use the in between or middle positions much. the neck is very warm sounding, but with enough bite for lead work. the bridge pickup verges into humbucker territory, it's a really fat sounding pickup.
For me, neck single when clean or heavily fuzzed, bridge single for overdriven.

cogito ergo sum...thing or other...
So you guys switch it up in the middle of a song? I've never gotten the hang of that. But I just play with a drummer unaccompanied so it's hard for me to dick aroung with my guitar during a song. I love bridge single coils. With the amp and guitar dialed in you can coax a variety of tones with just your hands.
