IT'S HERE! - raped 1962 Jaguar project!
hey there guys... well i just got back from work and my wifey had a package for me in my gear room - it finally arrived.
let me say, it's not as bad as i thought. the missing neckplate sitill bums me out but hey whatever.
the neck is in near immaculate shape, impressive. it's got the original logo, single-line kluson deluxes, the 2 62 penciled to the neck and a small "2" stamped into the wood (no color) in the neckpocket. i really think this could've been some sort of a prototype jag or so.
it comes with an old F neckplate which i assume to be non-original. it also comes with a MIJ white pickguard and a pair of gold (?!) bracket MIJ jag pups. must be off one of those gold/blond jags from the early 90s. cool.
there is the nail hole near the neck pocket (which has not been touched) and under the vol/tone control plate, it was just the angle of the pic), i'll check where i should find the other ones. the "main" vol/tone pots are '68 dated CTS, real nice. but then curiosity hit me... i unscrewed the little pots of the rhythm circuit and they are from the 50th week of 1961!!! so this IS the original '62 jaguar body. butchered but original!!! yaaay.
the refin is actually not THAT sloppy, kinda pearl-ish color, not too nasty. looks old. in the chips of the cavities etc. i see residue of some sort of turquise/blue-geenish color, but that could be of a previous refin. or not. but the body has been stripped before the refin. *sigh*
the thimbles are apparently of the fat/long kind, weird. the bridge is original and nice.
all the switches and jack are the original switchcrafts, but the tip of the rhythm circuit switch has broken off during shipping. i'll super-glue it back on. heh
so... after all, surprisingly, i really don't regret doing the deal. this guitar WILL be used and it'll be a fun restore project. i'll check out how these pups sound - maybe i won't even do the jazzuar thing, but we'll see, it still tempts me.
now i have a nice tort AVRI guard on the way to me (the MIJ don't fit well but thanks god it's never been attached or extra holes made, except for the humbucker ring ones. >:(
so... i need to download the wiring schematic, get out the soldering iron again (it's all disconnected) and go get some .10s. i can't wait.
now gimme a min to upload the pics and i'll post 'em in a min or 2.
rock on, thanks for the "support" guys!

Looks awesome dude, please dont jazzuar it
I would make it my quest to make as original as possible even it took a few years.
If you ever want rid...holla I am calling dibs.
I bet you feel a load cleaner without that les paul in the house.

some early jaguars have them, but not all. they were used on jazzmasters until '61 and then on jags and jazzies until they ran out sometime in early '62.Pacafeliz wrote:nope the tailpiece has a pat. no.bubbles_horwitz wrote:i say restore it. don't do a jazzuar.
does it have a pat. pend. tailpiece?
...should it? these were used on jazzmasters since '59 or so, right?

oh wow i didn't know...bubbles_horwitz wrote:[

ok here's a fresh pic of both my "new" offsets. i put the guitar together and will do the soldering this weekend when wifey and baby are out, i just CAN'T right now...

ok disregard the communist propaghanda in the middle of both guitars... heh :-[
i definitely don't like the color. at least not with a white guard on. i have a tort AVRI guard on the way... hopefully it won't take too long.
the MIJ guard don't fit it so it's just kinda floating around. might have to use the tape again, damn.
a prob i see, the guy took out pretty much wood (deep) to fit the humbuckers. there is not enough wood to screw the pickups back in, i'm afraid they'd come out on the back of the guitar! i'll need to get some wood filler or so.
i have a friend that works over at RS guitarworks but he sez a complete restore, refin and aging would be around $300-$500 and take up to 3-4 months. i KNOW they are as high-quality as it gets, and no one would ever notice any mod... but i can't spend that kinda dough on it.
for now i just want it to look half decent and be PLAYABLE. will probably need a new nut as well cuz this one's pretty worn and chipped on the low E side (massive buzz). i had to put a pick in the neck pocket as a shim, it kinda works now.
it SEEMS that that's a refret on the guitar, kinda edgy but i don't know. it it is, it looks pretty pro but ok, i need a new nut.
i can't wait to hear and play it.
NGD, yaay!

Lol I was just thinking how cool the black tape looked on the JM. You should get some screws but keep the tape.
Re. chucking a load of filler in the humbucker routes- I'd get a luthier (or just someone skilled with a router) to neaten the holes, cut some nice blocks and glue them in, then re-route the pickup cavities properly. Bit like my mate Ant did with my old tele:

i KNOW and i don't particularly like the tape. but the original tort guard has shrunk too much, it just won't fit anymore.Mike wrote:Tape to hold on the Jazzmaster pickguard. Really? Pickguard screws cost $3.
so now BOTH these guitars have non-fitting MIJ guards on them. that's why the tape is there.
i've already got an AVRI tort guard on the way for the Jag but i still need one for the Jazzmaster. i kinda like the green/white, though.

yes y'know i think that's sea foam in the cavities... damn!DGNR8 wrote:I would go gently and thoughtfully with mods. But since it's already been dicked with, you have lots O license. Am I seeing Sea Foam in the pockets here?
i think THAT'S the color i'm gonna choose for the re-fin. back to its former glory. oh yeah! DROOL on.
