This hype is totally crazy.
Seymour Duncan or almost any boutique pickup maker will make you a regular humbucker with Alnico (insert #) rod magnets instead of the bar for $150. This should satisfy anybody who wants "that something" that the original WRHBs had tonally. Saying the rods have to be cunife is like saying a good strat pickup has to be alnico 2 instead of 5....it's just preference, not a real design difference.
I think the coolest thing Fender did in the originals was to use magnetized poles instead of the bar like in a normal humbucker. Who cares what the magnets are made of? If they had used Alnico then, people would still want the originals (though there might be replicas in production).
If you want the look, which is what I suspect many folks are really drawn to, then get the reissues and be happy with 1 meg pots.

It'll be interesting to see what's said about these. One problem is that people are unlikely to talk badly about spending hundreds of dollars modifying modern pickups with such a long wait time. I'm not saying the wait is too long for the process, I imagine it does take quite a while to do what he's doing, just that it'll be easy to forget the nuances of the original pickup in that time. Hopefully someone who has had a set modded still has an original set to compare them to and can make some decent demos considering the ones the guy modding the pickups did were so lame.Telenator wrote:All outstanding orders have been shipped and reviews are starting to surface.
Another problem is that offset and the TDPRI don't seem like the type of places were someone is going to be critical of these. I don't know the TDPRI well enough to be sure of that, but it's Telenators main forum so I doubt there will be much debate there.
Shabba.

If you're willing to actually put the legwork into making demos that display the pickups in a fair test I'm sure a lot of us would be interested to hear the results. No blues noodling please. Chording and basic Arpeggios are the most accurate way to demonstrate tonal response.Mike wrote:There is no A/B test that you would need to have the slightest amount of credibility in his statements.
You need to A/B the following to "prove" his assertion.
1. MIM RI pickup stock
2. MIM RI pickup with 1meg pots
3. CIJ RI pickup stock
4. CIJ RI pickup with 1 meg pots
5. Original pickup stock
6 New pickup stock
7. New pickup with 1 meg pots
Same guitar, same amp, same settings.
Personally I was never disastisfied with the RI pickups in my Telecaster Deluxe after I changed the pots to 1meg. It sounded great. I never once felt the need to replace them.

You are not paying attention.Telenator wrote:Here's a link to some sound clips of the neck pickup. I am not a virtuoso or recording engineer but I think you'll get a fair idea of what this pickup retro-fit sounds like.

is that what all the fuss is about?Telenator wrote:Here's a link to some sound clips of the neck pickup. I am not a virtuoso or recording engineer but I think you'll get a fair idea of what this pickup retro-fit sounds like.

if that's (apparently) what WR's are supposed to sound like that's quite dissapointing.

This. Until this is done there is Zero Point trying to discuss it. You will not convince anyone who is skeptical without evidence and a fair test. It would also be an insanely useful Marketing Tool.benecol wrote:All you need to do is get three guitars - RI with RI pickups, RI with your pickups, and an original, then play all three > make youtube video.
It will make you Rich if your claims are substantiated by evidence. It's a foolhardy individual that buys based upon patter alone.
