Forgotten Gems (no, not steve vai kinda Jems lol)

Post by Progrockabuse »

i've been winging about my guitar sound for ages now. not enough low end, very bright amp, those kinda things. i've take all my pedals of the board and gone straight to amp to get a really nice clean sound, then started adding pedals.

enter the boss pw-2, a short lived discontinued distorion pedal. basically it's a marshall in a box, though instead of your usual tone knob or TMB stack. it has fat and muscle, which is kinda like bass and middle. it's supposed to make you sound like your playing through a 4X12.

i've had this for ages, got it new at music live when they were flogging them for £15. i used it for a bit, just to mess around with and then it went into the drawer of unused crap.

this has just solved my lack of low end and taken away the harshness. it's nice and tight and there's plenty of gain on tap, cleans up well with the volume on the guitar. the blues driver is off the board for the first time nearly ever, just waiting for the VTM to arrive and :hello new board!!!"

anyone else found a forgotten gem lurking at the back of the cupboard?

i dug out my old boss ce-2 chorus recently, but if i'm being honest i can't really see a situation where i'd use it at the moment. nice pedal, but i'm kind of anti-effects just now and can't really see that changing...

it does look cool though.

edit: that's not mine in the pic, my one looks like it's been used as a football.

i recently put the blue box back on my board, i can't get that sound with anything else so i don't mind the extra pedal, love it

i had it on my vocals board and used it on bass with LE but not for guitar (just one song), eventho i took it to doogfest but now it's back on my board because i missed it.

yeah, it's nice. i've had it for about 10 years, think it cost me £10. i was thinking of selling it, but it's something that could come in handy, and guaranteed if i did sell it a week later i'll have thought of a use for it... i'm a bit of a hoarder like that. i allow myself one non-dirt pedal on my board and i use delay a bit more than i'd use chorus, so it's bumped.

I have a CE-3 that my cousin sent to me from across the pond, it's not bad for a Boss CE compact.

Ibanez DML10 Modulation/Delay II, which is now a HUGE part of my electric guitar sound. It does everything, almost. I use it for automatic pitch shifting, broken sounds, loopy noisemaking, etc... It does crazy delay though. I mainly use it in conjunction with an EHX Dr. Q, as you can get this "melting quack" sound where it starts out very vibrant and gets more and more "toe-up-wah-sound" with each repeat, fucking awesome.

My brother got it from a friend in the late 90's (it's from the 80's) and it didn't work with a battery, so after a few years of it just lying around I put it on my pedalboard, which is wired for power, and was amazed at how awesome it is.

I've been thinking of replacing it with a Boss DD in the name of reliability though, I recently found out you can do almost all the same stuff with one apart from certain melty modulation effects.

Behringer DD100. Just got it out for doing some glitched out Battles style repetitions.
