hot rod deluxe i use with my 2x12. its too big and heavy to lug around with the 2x12. I thought about making a head to put it in...But then thought nah. just cut bits off and then stick it back together again.
So I did.
it is solid, but it's not a pro job by a long stretch because I had to reuse woood and material. I may order some new black cloth and silver grill and recover it and it should look kool. but for now I am pleased with my efforts.
Oh it is a little tall for a head..but that is as small as I could make it to fit the tubes.
It was my plan to do this to my squier 10 watt amp, a la doog many years ago. I realised it was quite a useful thing to keep as a combo though. It basically became my pedal test amp (for building). So I recovered it to match my cab. It's a bit rattly now though, I need to open it up and fix a loose speaker connection or something. I think I took pics after doing it, I'll see if I can find some.
The pictures aren't that great, but show the idea. I also broke the bass pot when removing the knob to try other ones. It broke in the one position I use it so it's no big deal.
Nothing wrong with a 40w head to carry around when the venue may have a decent cab to plug into, says me. THEN AGAIN, rewiring your newley-remodeled HRD to conceal a pair of swtchable 150W 6"x9" coaxial Jensens from my dad's Volvo would make a funky stealth head under that grill. Would sound quite nasty when necessary too!
Do you mean wide or deep? I presume the tubes in the combo point the same way as the knobs do, if you were looking down the pot shaft of a knob, that would be the way the tube is sighted?
Either way, he charges a bunch to do it so I think his is an involved mod. Anyway - better than having the bare chassis on your cab.

was looking for that pic. it's a great mod but kind of severe for what you essentially get out of it (i.e. a lighter version of the original amp..) - would rather trade the amp in for a used bassman head...

deep.
well if you see the hight of mine well the tubes are the reason it is this hight. so if turned it so the front was the bottom. the thing would be quite deep. and his is not. So he must done quite a bit of twiddling.
