Overwound SCs or 'buckers?

I'm looking to replace the stock SCs in my MIJ Mustang. I'm looking for something punchy and midrange-heavy for the bridge (HONK!). I like the sound I get from the Duncan JB in my 335, but it's too high-output to get versatile cleans. Ideally, I'm looking for a P-90 type sound with moderate output.

Should I be looking at overwound SCs or a single-sized 'bucker? Is there a single-sized P-90 that doesn't cost the earth?

The neck PUP just plain sucks - either way too muted and dull or spikey. Pretty much anything would be better. I'm not going to use it much, so I really just want something cheap that will cop a decent jazz sound and isn't a Lipstick, since I have too many of those.

Suggestions?

I'd go for a hotter single personally, the SD I've got in the jazzy is really midrangey but the cleans are kinda muddy.

I've got an hot bridge pup in me jag and I love the "focused" sound, it's quite similar to the P90 in my artcore, pronounced mids and highs.

go for overwound SCs imo. i had texas specials in my mustang for some time, it was good. but i mostly play the neck pickup, so this may be not very relevant

how about a JBJR...it's probably not as high output as the full sized bucker is. Even though I do like the stock pups in my mustang, there is some room for improvement. I'm thinking of getting a JBJR for the bridge, and a texas special for the neck of my mustang sometime soon.

I think the Duncan QP's are supposed to be like a single coil P-90, am I wrong on that?

Some overwound SCs are higher output than some humbuckers, so thats no argument. You have to understand what is happening here, the guitar signal will 'clip' the amplifiers gain depending on the strength of the signal. This can be controlled with your guitars volume and amps gain or volume in some cases. A PAF humbucker is capable of maginificient cleans, listen to 'Another brick in the wall' by Pink Floyd. Some of that song was recorded on a vintage Les Paul. Or check some of Johnny Marrs work on a 335.

I dig the PAF sound, so a lil' 59 might be an option. I also have an old hot rails I'm gonna try just for the hell of it.

The second ones down are P-90s in SC size, plus they're fully shielded so I'm guessing they'll be pretty quiet. They're about $65, so not too bad either.

I normally haet 'buckers too, but as an effect now and then they're nice.

think that's right. i have some equivalent ones from tom anderson in a strat and they're middly as hell. you can also get the qp's in tappable form (single coil but three wires) to throttle them back to more 'classic' sounding pups.

"Hard rock" is such an amusing term. Chances are anyone using the term thinks rock music doesn't get any more harder than the faster Bon Jovi numbers.

I wanted to mention this and heres a good thread, Doog.. the guitarist in Warrior Soul had the same Strat set up as you with P90s. His sound sliced my ear drums to pieces, he is a heavy guitarist but they extra treble made him sound quite unique. He had an inca silver Strat with cream P90s, aged pickguard. The tone knobs were missing as well lol, tone knobs? who needs 'em?

i haven't used humbuckers as my main sound for like two years. not that i wouldn't again; i'm just as likely to favor them as i am singles. point being: don't haet.
