Surely you don't mean to say that you make a point of listening to nothing but bland, overplayed, formulaic pop music.

Um, no, it doesn't mean that. I tend not to listen to all that much stuff which is on the radio, or even off-radio "pop" music.

When I was an infant and toddler (very early 1960s), I listened mostly to the (then new) out jazz. Made my parents despair.

Then I was listening to a "black liberation" format station, so for me there was Motown, then James Brown and Sly Stone, then George Clinton.

Then I listened almost exclusively to jazz until college, (1976-1980) when I joined a Zappa/Little Feat cover band. Many of our opening set tunes were Stones, Beatles, occasionally some Allman Brothers. It was pretty comical - someone would call up some Beatles tune in rehearsal, and I would be hearing it for the first time.

So I have a pretty long history of not listening to pop music.

It's just that I don't really understand the meaning of 'alt' in the context of music genres when no reference to what 'alt' opposes is mentioned.
A quick wikipedia search on the bands and projects you listed indicates a strong heavy blues/stoner rock leaning.
I think you'll find alot of shortscalers are down with that kind of stuff.

Well "alt-" turns out to have been a marketing tool. I remember back in the day when some of the "hippest" young A&R men were turning cartwheels over finally getting the Police onto FM radio. They thought they had kicked down the doors and driven the "Establishment" money changers from the temple. Well, yes, A&R men are like that. It's also pretty funny since my best friend is a sometime big time music producer who has really made his reputation with many "alt-" bands athough by no means is that his only work. So I like all sorts stuff, but hardly any of the newer stuff he's been up to. I can tell it's serious well crafted music since I know a little about what goes into producing it - I've just never been able to really like much of it.

And yeah, I do have a huge stoner/classic-ish rock streak, but I cover a lot of other territory (doesn't everyone as time goes on?) It's probably just my personal experience but most of the short scale players I have met personally were in the alt- world. It's good to hear that this scale length gets appreciation in other genres. The big deal for me with scale length is the huge sustain you can get with big big strings, and the extra overtone sauce you get because the harmonics of the heavy string have a bit more deviation from the pure multiples of the fundamental that you get with lighter strings. Another reason I use the humbuckers is because the aperture of the humbuckers is a bigger fraction of the string than say, on 25.5" scale. Again, this lets a little bit more harmonic color through, and you can get a little more bite compared to humbuckers on the longer scale guitar.

It's also too band you had to check with Wiki for those bands, though, yeah, I know music doesn't have to be popular to be good, but a good deal of the stuff I listed ought to be more popular than it has been so far.
