the faux burst jags were mid 60s CBS era. the bodies were made with multiple pieces of wood so they painted a primer coat to cover it up and then (like sublimedo said) they painted on a little wood grain effect. so it's not like a real burst where you can see the actual wood grain of the guitar.
I'm a fan of them too. they're kind of tacky but cool. I like how bright the colors are on the burst unlike a normal burst.
Often, you'll find the actual "burst" effect on faux burst is kinda ham fisted, too... like the colours don't fade in with eachother very well and the result is rather RAAF target-like. I kinda dig a really badly executed burst, actually.

oh yea, it's called "target-burst" sometimes. yea, I think the colors don't blend that well because they can't mix in with the wood grain. so you just see them at their full intensity.

couple of things wrong with that, the jag up there is a 1969 jaguar as is mine. also I have heard the multi piece body thing loads. however my faux burst you can see the edge, and there is only 1 join. I suspect the multi piece thing did happen(in fact i have seen it), but the faux burst was more a thing to cover ugly wood that normally went on custom colours. and to give a uniform grain to every guitar.

target burst and faux burst are completely different things.
The guy in the Zutons had a weird burst Jaguar when I saw them on Friday. The black section of the burst was almost like it looks on Antigua (VOM) - like a Black smoky grey.. but it was definitely going to a red/orange centre section. Very red tort scratchplate too. Not all together that good looking - sounded great though.
