What wire gauge for wiring up speaker cab?

Post by Pens »

A buddy that works at Radio Shack is going to nab me some wire for my cab. He asked what gauge to get, I was thinking about 20 gauge but I'm really not sure what is standard for these things, never messed with one before.

Can anyone confirm what gauge I should get?

I have just generally used whatever they would sell me as decent speaker cable for a home stereo system.

I bought some cable that was too thick by mistake once. I wanted to use it for pedal building but it was too thick to fit in the stripboatd holes. I used some of that to do my cab. I think it's 30 or 32 guage. I haven't actually looked in the back of the cab since I wired it up, but I've never had any problems with it. Here's a pic where you can see a bit of it.

Thinking about it I probably should have used speaker cable or something fairly heavy duty.

Okay, thanks guys. I'll just tell him to get whatever decent home audio wire they have and use that.
