So I typed "Self-made"

Post by ultratwin »

...into the search function of Korea's massive online market community at www.mule.co.kr and found a few surprises. Some Korean kids have been very busy in between gigs checking out the plethora of schems available online, it seems...With heaps of these trading hands pretty often. As the dollar and yen have both soared 50% over the Korean won in the past 9 months, half of me doesn't blame them: Import stuff is horribly expensive at the moment.

I like that they didn't even try to creatively change some of the names.

yeah, but who cares ? it does the job, if they're nicely built clones, we pay too much for pedals anyway, if i had the skills i would look up schemes and build them myself too tbh.

Yay for the analog delays- wonder what schematics they've used.
Nay for the bare metal boxes and comic sans!

They keep coming...

Yar, Fulltone Fulldrive. $40

MI Tubezone. It and the OCD/BOR seem to be the most copied pedals on the boards.

Hahah...Drive of rock! And the venerable BSIAB, of course.

And crossing deep into the sprawling hills of East Sussex, yet another Kentaurus:

Supadupa : Zvex Super Duper 2-in-1 copy

MXR Dist+ copy

INSANE: The black SS one is a Box of Rock + Crank Maximus(?), the yellow Carpe Diem one a Lovetone Eternity + modded Mentone Red Snapper with an A/B output for tuner.

It's like a second belly button!
. The above Mini Hard-On seems to have been removed.

If I typed 'self made' into some sort off search engine I wouldn't expect just pedals to turn up!
You might as well have typed 'housewives bangers'

Those are awesome. Will Ultra be purchasing these for demos? :D

It's one word in Korean, and was a very specific search term for a site that deals with mostly private party guitar/pedal exchanges: 자작 chajak. The only other things that showed up were cool homemade Fender amp heads and Jaco-inspired fretless basses. A search for "clone" yielded similar results.

I dunno. Too many pedals around the house to shake a headstock at, but the price of them is quite alluring. I met a guy several months back here whose entire board was homemade, with an OCD, Xotic BB, TS9, chorus, analog delay etc, even his own DC powerbox. He swore by the schematics, and wired everything himself...and for that matter I might go after that SHO(which seems to be made by quite a reputable dude). Besides, it's just to cute to overlook, although I will definitely want it to have a "Mini Hard-on" sticker on it instead. :P

I think it's very tempting when you start making effects to fall into the trap of 'hey I can put liek a dozen effects in one box with a dozen knobs and push-pull'. Those last few up there are going down that road.

Very cool. It's smaller than I could make it, they'll have made a special PCB to get that crammed in there so small. Noice.
