EDIT: yeah, they are routed already, and the routs are oversized so they can take minihums as well. and, by starting with the one pup version, i get the two knob layout i like! sweet!

to be fair, if it's already routed (by the factory presumably, old musicmaster II style) and all the mods he's planning are reversible i don't really see the harm. he's getting a new guard, not cutting up that one, the tuners are the same type, and he's keeping all the parts. it would just be a case of sticking the old bits back on in the event of a sale.

+1. Do what you want to your guitar, these are all practical and reversible mods. Plus I like the new tuners.

okay a few things:

glad some of you picked up on the fact that i am exremely careful about not fucking this guitar up, i e i am changing the guard, not routing, etc.

yes, it was routed at the factory.

um, yeah tort would look bad. i guess i was thinking about copping some of that sherwood/tort fender sweetness. but yeah, not this guitar.

lets also consider that many peeps who proclaim "DONT FUCK IT UP ITS GREAT HOW IT IS" have never played this particular model, and don't really know its highs and lows.

also, im only sort of a newb. i used to post on JS.com back in the day (circa 03) and had thousands of posts, and witnessed the great greg meltdown, founding of shortscale, etc.

maybe i will go for a set of lindy fralin mustang pups, to keep it stylistically more along the MM lines.

also, the new tuners might make the tuning stability ok enough to use the vibrola. but old stickies+vibrola=um, no. also im paranoid one of the buttons is going to twist off and im going to piss myself.


i am actually quite disappointed that everyone cares so much about REVERSIBLE mods that will make a cool old guitar a cool old versatile guitar that can be used more often due to its flexibility. like somebody (and myself) said, none of my mods are permanent, and im not like, new to this or anything. i feel like nobody read my post, only saw the pics and jumped to conclusions.

It's cool, I reckon you should do whatever, but I think I'd try to let it look as it should, so age the guard and put an aged robroe cover on the bridge.

typically 2 and 3 pickup MM's had mustang style 3 way sliders on the pickguard



im not really into "aging" the plastic, i dunno. as long as the plastic all matches, im cool with whatever.

i dont really see how aging plastic is more legit than faking playwear on the finish or fretboard, and im definitely not into that.


also, by the way i went by experimentaljetset, then shoryuken years ago. i dont expect anyone to remember really, but there it is.

Having said that, I'm not sure I could get used to seeing Pelham Blue without there being that kind of aged pickguard on it. I think if it's tasteful, then a bit of aging is okay, but generally I'm not a fan.

i see your point. maybe my mind will be made up when i get all that new shiny plastic on it. might look fine. might be way wrong.

stewmac has a great article by dan erlewine about aging those style tuners. made me consider it but im still not sure.

anyhow, the stock pickup in the mm is not quite right. so bright and pretty noisey, okay at low volumes but when loud i have to eq it pretty severely to get it ear friendly, and then i lose alot of my high freq response. maybe i need a better eq, but i think id rather just get a new pickup that has the sound i want already and is quieter, etc. i really dont see why thats so offensive.

I've played a good few of these. They sound pretty damn great stock. Can't you get versatility from your effects and amp setup? What's wrong with the existing tuners aside from not being 'modern' enough for you. I bet they hold tune fine.

I know it's your guitar, but I just find it a bit sad that you've bought a gorgeous vintage melody maker that hasn't been raped by any of it's previous owners to perform your mong modifications on.

i already said, i am worried about twisting off one of the old plastic buttons on the tuners, and they don't really hold tune that well either, and since they are still making them (form wise) i dont see the difference in changing them, except smoother operation and piece of mind that im not going to fuck up my vintage assed tuners.

it sounds good, in a way, but its so bright! its seriously the brightest pickup ive ever heard, way brighter than my e series japanese squier strat or my silvertone 1451.

the only guitar i ever had that was this earsplittingly bright was my all maple 70s epi coronet (i think thats what it was). the bridge humbucker in that this was strangely bright, almost like it was made wrong or something.
